Electrical Engineer – HV Substations (Consultancy)
Mitros is an Irish engineering team that designs, installs and maintains complete energy systems nationwide. Our work runs from commercial solar and utility-scale battery storage (BESS) to grid infrastructure, substation works and specialist engineering such as SCADA, PLC and ATEX. We serve utilities, developers and commercial, industrial and agricultural clients, including pharmaceutical and other regulated sites. Ireland's grid is being rebuilt to meet the 2030 climate targets, and we're growing our HV team so we can advise clients on the substations and grid connections that make their projects possible.
The Role
You’ll be the client's technical voice on HV substation projects from 20kV to 400kV. Working as a Mitros Engineer, Client Engineer or Technical Advisor, you'll make sure the designs and installations that contractors deliver are safe, compliant and good value. You'll be involved from feasibility and grid application through to construction and energisation, working directly with clients, EirGrid, ESB Networks and EPC contractors.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as Mitros' Engineer on substation projects for utilities, IPPs and data centre developers.
- Review and comment on contractor designs (SLDs, layouts, earthing, protection and control, equipment specifications) for compliance with EirGrid and ESB Networks functional specifications, IEC standards and the contract.
- Prepare requirements, technical specifications and tender documents, and evaluate tender returns.
- Support grid connection applications, connection offer reviews and EirGrid/ESB Networks interface and contestability processes.
- Carry out technical due diligence and feasibility studies for developers, lenders and investors.
- Monitor construction quality on site, witness factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT), and track snagging and handover.
- Write clear technical reports, design review registers and client briefings.
- Help manage technical risk, change control and the programme alongside project managers and cost consultants.
- Contribute to proposals, fee bids and framework submissions.
- Promote safety in design and on site, including the client's duties under the Construction Regulations (PSDP/PSCS).
- Mentor graduate engineers and share knowledge across the team.
Requirements
- Level 8 honours degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- At least 3–5 years' experience on HV substation projects at 38kV and above, in design, delivery, commissioning or a client-side role.
- Good understanding of AIS/GIS substations, power transformers, switchgear, protection and control, and HV cables.
- Working knowledge of the relevant IEC/EN standards and the Irish grid connection process.
- Confidence reviewing other engineers' work and putting technical positions to clients and contractors.
- Strong report writing and presentation skills.
- Chartered Engineer status (Engineers Ireland or IET), or actively working towards it.
- Full, clean driving licence and willingness to travel to sites.
- Engineer, Client Engineer or consultancy experience, ideally on EirGrid or ESB Networks projects.
- Experience on renewables, BESS, data centre or transmission reinforcement projects.
- Knowledge of FIDIC, NEC or Public Works Contracts.
- Familiarity with power systems or earthing studies (DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP, CDEGS).
- UK utility (DNO/TO) or international experience.
