Job summary

Digital Realty Ireland offers a QQI Level 6 Advanced certificate - Craft apprenticeship designed to launch a hands-on engineering career within our data centres. You’ll work in a live data centre environment, learning to maintain LV electrical systems, UPS, generators, cooling plant, and BMS controls under guidance from experienced engineers.

The programme combines seven phases across college and company rotations.

Qualifications

  • 18 years of age or above by November 2026.
  • Grade D in five Leaving Certificate subjects or equivalent by August 2026.
  • Completion of a Pre-Apprenticeship or SOLAS-acceptable industrial experience.
  • Full driving license or on track to gain within 6 months.
  • Strong interest in electrical systems and willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain critical systems such as LV electrical distribution, UPS, generators, switchgear, cooling plant, pumps, and BMS/controls.
  • Support planned maintenance and inspections to prevent incidents.
  • Respond to faults and alarms calmly, aiding diagnostics and restoration.
  • Follow permits, RAMS, and safe systems of work in a mission-critical environment.
  • Learn from experienced data centre engineers through structured learning and shadowing.
  • Develop technical capability through progressively more independent tasks.

This is aQQI Level 6 Advanced certificate - Craft designed for people who want a hands-on career, real responsibility, and a clear path into a permanent engineering role in our data centres upon successful completion

This opportunity is ideal for someone who wants to build a long-term engineering career and is excited by the idea of working in a high-tech, high-impact environment. You don’t need to know everything on day one - you need the attitude to learn, contribute, and grow.

What you’ll do (and learn)

You’ll work in alive, mission-critical data centre environment - a clean, highly controlled technical space wheresafety, precision, and teamworkcome first. Expect to be hands-on aroundelectrical switchgear, UPS systems, generators, cooling plant, pumps, and air-handling equipment, supporting the infrastructure that keeps customers online 24/7. It’s a fast-paced setting with clear procedures, strict access controls, and a strong “do it right first time” culture—where you’ll learn from experienced engineers, build confidence on real equipment, and take pride in keeping essential services running.

You’ll work in key areas of data center operations, building practical skills and confidence in both electrical and mechanical engineering. With support from your mentor and the wider team, you’ll learn how to:
  • Maintain critical systemssuch as LV electrical distribution, UPS, generators, switchgear, cooling plant, pumps, motors, valves, and BMS/controls
  • Support planned maintenance and inspections, learning how best practice prevents incidents before they happen
  • Respond to faults and alarmscalmly and safely, helping diagnose issues and restore normal operation
  • Use permits, RAMS, and safe systems of work—because safety and professionalism are non-negotiable in mission-critical environments
  • Work with specialist contractors and internal teams, learning how great teamwork keeps complex environments running smoothly
  • Develop your technical capabilitythrough structured learning, shadowing, and progressively more independent tasks as you grow

Qualifications

Minimum requirements to apply for this role:

  • 18 years of age or above by November 2026.
  • Grade D in five subjects in the Department of Education & Skills Leaving Certificate Examination or an approved equivalent by August 2026

OR

  • The successful completion of an approved Pre-Apprenticeship course

OR

  • Three years’ work experience gained over sixteen years of age in a relevant designated industrial activity as SOLAS shall deem acceptable

AND

  • A full drivers license or on track to gain your license within the next 6 months.
  • Strong interest in electrical systems and a willingness to learn.
