Job summary

Corlann requires a part-time counsellor/therapist to deliver psychotherapy to adults with intellectual disabilities and to work within an integrated team across Galway and surrounding areas.

The role involves collaboration with clinical psychologists, social workers, psychiatry, nursing, and therapy colleagues, ensuring a person-centred approach and robust documentation. Applications close soon and training may be provided.

Qualifications

• Recognised Level 7+ qualification on NQAI in Medicine or Health & Social Care (e.g., Psychology, Social Work, OT, SLT) or Nursing registration.
• Accredited counselling/psychotherapy qualification recognised by a relevant body.
• Post-graduate counselling qualification recognised by the Psychological Society of Ireland.

Responsibilities

• Provide psychotherapy/counselling for adults with intellectual disability.
• Collaborate with an inter disciplinary team and the wider core staff and managers.
• Assess risk and manage it, following professional guidelines and policy directives.
• Plan and conduct meetings, promotions of best practice, and staff training where required.

POST OF PERMANENT PART- TIME COUNSELLOR/THERAPIST

The Role:

The Counsellor will provide psychotherapy/counselling services for adults with an intellectual disability.

Reporting/Responsible To:

Head of Psychology Department/Deputy

Works With:

Adults with intellectual disability in a collaborative and integrative manner with the wider core team supporting e.g., frontline staff, team leaders, service managers, and colleagues in disciplines which include, clinical psychologists, social workers, psychiatry, nursing, speech and language therapy, and occupational therapy.

Purpose:

To ensure a holistic and person centred approach, the successful candidate will work in a collaborative and integrative manner with the wider core team supporting the person.

Many of the adults with mild intellectual disability supported by Corlann avail of community based services and hence a number of agencies and services provide various elements of support. As a result collaboration with key staff providing services across agencies is critical as the team supporting the adult may be an interagency team.

The successful candidate may provide training sessions to enhance the skills of staff working with people with emotional lability and other needs as may be required from time to time.

Qualifications/Experience:

Candidates must, at the latest date for receipt of completed applications for the post possess:

• A recognised qualification at Level 7 or higher qualification on the NQAI framework in Medicine, relevant Health & Social Care Professionals (e.g. Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy) or registered or eligible to be registered as a Nurse with An Bord Altranais.
• An Accredited qualification in counselling or psychotherapy recognised by the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, a relevant body within the Irish Council for Psychotherapy, or equivalent body in another jurisdiction, of which there is sufficient theoretical content, clinical placements, skills training and personal development as part of the qualification.
• A post-graduate qualification in counselling recognised by the Psychological Society of Ireland.
• A full driving license and use of a car is an essential requirement.

Working Hours:

42 hours per week based on a 5 day duty roster.

Contracted hours of work are liable to change from 8am to 8pm to meet the requirements of the programme. Future developments within the services may require that you are prepared to transfer to other work locations as the service needs demand.

Corlann model of service is based on Personal Outcome Measures quality and person centred planning system requiring employees to be flexible in their working hours to provide a quality service delivery for each person supported

Remuneration:

Department Of Health Counsellor Therapist - National Counselling Service, salary scale (01/06/2026) - 54,763 x 14 increments - € 96,056 (max) per annum (pro-rata for part-time).

Annual Leave:

27 days per annum (pro-rata for part-time)

Tenure:

The post is permanent part-time and pensionable.

Probation

A probationary period of nine months from the date of appointment applies to the post. The employment may be terminated at any time during the probationary period should the employer find that the appointee is unsuitable to continue employment. The probation period may be extended at the employer’s discretion.
