Job summary

Veolia Group in Blanchardstown, Ireland, seeks a Clean Utilities Technician to operate, maintain and troubleshoot high-purity utility systems in a cGMP pharmaceutical facility.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor PW, WFI, RO and UF systems using DeltaV.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on clean utilities equipment.
  • Diagnose operational anomalies and manage alarms to minimize downtime.
  • Sanitize and regenerate storage and distribution loops per protocol.
  • Maintain logs, batch records, work orders and shift handovers per cGMP.
  • Coordinate with QC/EM for sampling and validation of water systems.

Clean Utilities Technician

Location: Blanchardstown

Duration: Permanent

Hours: 39 Hours per week (07:30 to 16:00)

Overview of the role

The Clean Utilities Technician is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of critical high-purity utility systems within our pharmaceutical manufacturing facility. Operating in a strict Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) environment, the successful candidate will oversee generation and distribution loops for Purified Water, Water for Injection (WFI), and advanced filtration units. Utilizing the Emerson DeltaV Distributed Control System (DCS) and maintaining a proactive safety culture, this role ensures an uninterrupted supply of compliant clean utilities to support core production schedules.

Responsibilities
  • System Operation & Automation Monitoring: Monitor, control, and optimize generation and distribution systems for Purified Water (PW), Water for Injection (WFI), Reverse Osmosis (RO), and Ultrafiltration (UF) units utilizing the DeltaV control system.
  • Preventative & Corrective Maintenance: Perform mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation preventative maintenance (PM) and corrective repairs on clean utility equipment, including pumps, sanitary valves, UV sanitizers, heat exchangers, and distribution pipework.
  • Troubleshooting & Alarm Response: Diagnose and resolve operational anomalies, process deviations, and equipment alarms generated through DeltaV to minimize system downtime and maintain continuous utility delivery.
  • Sanitisation & Regeneration: Execute and document routine chemical, thermal, and ozone sanitization sequences across WFI and Purified Water storage and distribution loops, ensuring total microbial control.
  • Compliance & Documentation: Ensure all operational logs, batch records, maintenance work orders (via CMMS), and shift handovers are meticulously documented in strict accordance with cGMP and data integrity guidelines.
  • Sampling & Quality Support: Interface with Quality Control (QC) and Environmental Monitoring (EM) teams to facilitate regular sampling, water testing, and validation protocols for pure utilities.
Requirements
  • Education: A third-level qualification (Ordinary Bachelor’s Degree, Advanced Diploma, or Level 7 equivalent) in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Science, or a related discipline; OR a fully certified trade qualification (e.g., Mechanical Automation & Maintenance Fitting, Electrical, Instrumentation, or HVAC).
  • Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of direct operational experience handling clean utilities within a regulated pharmaceutical or biomanufacturing facility.
  • System Expertise: Proven, hands‑on experience operating and maintaining Water for Injection (WFI) systems, Purified Water generation plants, Reverse Osmosis (RO) units, and Ultrafiltration (UF) filtration technology.
  • Automation & Computer Competency: Demonstrated high level of computer competency, including proficiency in using Distributed Control Systems (DCS) like Emerson DeltaV for real‑time process monitoring, as well as navigating modern CMMS platforms, digital data‑loggers, and electronic batch records (EBR).
  • Safety Culture & Compliance: A deeply ingrained, solid safety culture with extensive experience managing hazards specific to pharma utility systems, including comprehensive familiarity with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols, chemical handling (for sanitization), high‑pressure steam safety, and confined space entry codes. Clear understanding of cGMP regulations, FDA/EMA pure water standards, and cleanroom protocols.
  • Ability duly to interpret complex Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), operational manuals, and functional specifications.
  • Solid troubleshooting skills combining mechanical aptitude with automation/instrumentation literacy.
