Job summary

St James's Hospital in Ireland seeks an experienced Chief Clinical Engineering Technician to lead the MPBE equipment management and safety programs. The post reports to the Head of Department and may work across affiliated institutions.

You will supervise technical staff, contribute to budget planning, oversee maintenance contracts, and drive professional development and training aligned with the department's quality system.

Qualifications

  • NFQ Level 7 or higher in an engineering discipline (Electronic, Electrical, Instrument Physics, Industrial Instrumentation, Applied Physics, Mechanical, Mechtronic, Biomedical Engineering) or equivalent.
  • Seven years postgraduate experience in a relevant field, with at least five years in a hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and administrative capacity for departmental duties.

Responsibilities

  • Lead equipment management and maintenance programs within MPBE.
  • Support development and management of budget for appropriate teams.
  • Manage 24-hour on-call service and safety compliance.
  • Coordinate training and development of Clinical Engineering Technicians.

Education

NFQ Level 7 or higher in Engineering

Role Title: Chief Clinical Engineering Technician

Purpose of the Role:

The holder of the post will be a member of the Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering (MPBE) and will report within the management structure adopted by the Department to the Head of Department. They will also liaise and work as required with other staff and grades within and outside the Department and may be assigned to duties within any of the institutions to which the Department provides services. The holder of this post will not be under detailed day to day supervision and will be expected to exercise considerable initiative and demonstrate leadership in the performance of their duties Within the framework outlined above, the holder of the post will undertake duties as required from the following list: Work to the requirements the Departments Quality Management System and contribute to its continual improvement. Provide expert technical support through participation, supervision and oversight of the equipment management work of the appropriate teams/groups. Contribute to the administration and record system of the department and provide such records of their work, as are deemed necessary. Contribute to the development of the Departments policies and services, through participation in the work of, managing, contributing to the management of and assisting with budget preparation for the appropriate teams/groups. Monitor, review and oversee, as required, maintenance services and contracts purchased from external agencies. Contribute to the management and follow up of Field Safety Notices Ensure that preventative/scheduled maintenance and breakdown service are performed to a standard of safety, accuracy and reliability consistent with the function of the equipment and with professional standards. Participate in the selection, specification acceptance testing, safety testing etc. of new equipment and services. Advise and participate in the design, specification and development of new installations and services. Provide support and supervision of students and technical staff and promote continuing professional development. Co-ordinate and manage the training of Clinical Engineering Technicians and develop appropriate training pathways Contribute, as required, to the education and training programmes to which the Department is committed. Contribute to the support of research activities in the MPBE Department and in other departments to which services are provided. Contribute as required to the development of in-house and external training programs. Participate in in-service training courses and conferences to a level that will ensure their competence and knowledge is kept up to date. Manage the Departments 24 hour on-call service. Contribute to the preparation of budgetary estimates for the Departments expenditure. Perform such other duties as may be assigned to them. The appointee may, if offered it, engage in limited consultancy or accept an appropriate academic appointment, provided always that such work does not in any way conflict with the appointees obligations to the hospital and provided that the prior approval of the Head of Department has been obtained. Participate and cooperate with legislative and regulatory requirements in relation to Health and Safety as outlined in the Safety, Health and Welfare Act 2005 and the Hospital Safety Statement. Ensure own mandatory learning and training is kept up to date.

Required:

Candidates must on the latest date for receipt of completed application forms hold the following minimum qualifications. These are minimum qualifications and recognition will be given for additional qualifications: Hold as a minimum a recognised qualification at National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ), Level 7 or higher, in one of the following engineering disciplines; Electronic, Electrical, Instrument Physics, Industrial Instrumentation, Applied Physics, Mechanical, Mechtronic, Biomedical Engineering Or Hold a recognised qualification at least equivalent to one of the above And (b) Have a minimum of seven years postgraduate satisfactory and relevant experience in an appropriate field, including at least 5 of which must have been in a hospital. And (c) Candidates must possess the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and administrative capacity) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
