Job summary

St James's Hospital Dublin is seeking a Basic Grade Respiratory and Sleep Physiologist to join the Respiratory & Sleep Laboratory. The role involves performing pulmonary function tests, overnight sleep studies, CPAP titration, and ensuring quality control and accurate patient records.

The candidate should possess an appropriate BSc in Clinical Measurement or equivalent Level 8 qualification and demonstrable clinical competence in respiratory physiology.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must hold one of the specified BSc/qualifications by the application date.
  • Includes BSc in Clinical Measurement from DIT or TU Dublin or equivalent Level 8 qualification.
  • MPPM certificate or equivalent scientific qualification recognised by IICMS.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct full range of routine pulmonary function tests (PFTs) including spirometry, reversibility, DLCO, and static lung volumes.
  • Perform haemoglobin measurements on suitable patients undergoing DLCO testing.
  • Conduct overnight diagnostic sleep tests (polysomnography) and sleep titration on nasal CPAP therapy.
  • Calibrate equipment daily and perform routine maintenance per lab protocols.
  • Prepare and manage patient appointments and respond to queries regarding PFTs and sleep studies.
  • Engage in quality control, audits, and clinical research within the Sleep/Pulmonary Laboratory.

Purpose of the Role:

The Respiratory & Sleep Laboratory is committed to providing a professional, flexible and quality assured service, delivering reports of the highest standard. Our objectives are to:

  • Measure the effect of disease on lung function
  • Follow the course of any disease affecting lung function
  • Assess pre-operative surgical risk
  • Provide clinicians with reports of the highest quality
  • Provide a diagnostic sleep service and initiate treatment under Physicians instructions
  • Follow up patients on CPAP therapy to improve compliance and efficacy.
  • To engage in modernisation and implement change according to best international practice.
  • Conduct a full range of routine pulmonary function tests including:
  • Spirometry, Reversibility, DLCO, Static lung volumes (multi-breath and body plethysmography), Muscle strength tests and Skin allergy tests on all patients attending the Respiratory laboratory.
  • Conduct Haemoglobin measurements on suitable patients undergoing DLCO testing*.
  • Perform administrative duties relating to scheduling patient appointments for PFT’s.
  • Deal effectively with queries regarding PFT tests and appointments.
  • Conduct and manually score overnight diagnostic sleep tests, including, Full polysomnography studies and limited sleep studies*.
  • Conduct and supervise overnight titration studies on nasal CPAP therapy*.
  • Calibrate equipment daily and perform routine maintenance and cleaning on equipment as per laboratory protocols, under the direction of the senior staff.
  • Participate in Quality control program to ensure accurate and reproducible results.
  • Participate in regular audits as part of the multidisciplinary team in the Sleep/Pulmonary Laboratory
  • Report any malfunctioning or unsafe equipment to senior staff
  • Ensure clinical standards and standards of patient care are followed at all times
  • Ensure that accurate patient records and Departmental statistics are recorded
  • Participate in the clinical research activity in the Department when required
  • Follow hospital policies and procedures in all aspects of care
  • Be familiar with the hospital and Department disaster plans and their implementation
  • Undertake clerical duties, including making appointments, dealing with queries, filling reports, etc. if required.
  • Participate and cooperate with legislative and regulatory requirements in relation to Health and Safety as outlined in the Safety, Health and Welfare Act 2005 and the Hospital Safety Statement.

Required:

Candidates must have at the latest date of application: -

  • Possess the BSc in Clinical Measurement from Dublin Institute of Technology

Or

  • Possess the BSc in Clinical Measurement from Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin)

Or

  • Possess an equivalent relevant scientific qualification (Level 8) as confirmed by the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurements Science (IICMS)

Or

  • (a) Possess the Certificate in Medical Physics and Psychological Measurement (MPPM) from Dublin Institute of Technology

Or

  • (b) An equivalent scientific qualification as confirmed by the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Science awarded in or before 2005. (See Note 1*)

And

  • Candidates must have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

And

  • Demonstrate clinical competence and relevant experience in a Respiratory and/or Sleep Physiology Department.
