Job summary

Headland Archaeology is seeking an Archaeology and Built Heritage Consultant to join our expanding Consultancy team in Ireland. You will deliver technical outputs such as Archaeological Impact Assessments (AIAs) and EIARs, work with clients and statutory consultees, and help shape heritage recommendations across projects island-wide.

The role is permanent, full-time (37.5h/week) with flexible working options and a probation period.

Qualifications

• Degree in archaeology or related subject.
• Experience in archaeological consultancy and/or commercial field work.
• Experience of report writing (AIAs/EIARs/RAMS).
• Full driving licence and willingness to travel across Ireland.
• Prepared to join a professional body for the historic environment.
• Health and safety awareness and good organisational skills.
• Strong communication, ability to work under pressure and use initiative.
• Proficiency with MS Office and fluent English.

Responsibilities

The Role

We are looking to appoint an archaeological consultant with experience in the preparation of technical documents supporting clients in addressing heritage constraints.

The appointee will deliver technical outputs of a high standard to time and budget, such as Archaeological Impact Assessments (desk-based assessments), EIARs and ad hoc technical advice.

The appointee will have an understanding of the legislative, policy and regulatory framework within which commercial archaeology is undertaken in both Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Applicants should have demonstrable experience of contributing to technical reports (such as site reports, archaeological desk-based assessments, environmental impact assessments and/or built heritage statements and Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).

We are looking for a candidate to liaise with clients, work with statutory consultees, assess impacts on the historic environment, oversee archaeological sub-contractors, and prepare technical advice. The level of responsibility will reflect the successful applicant’s skills and experience. We provide training and opportunities to develop staff and to help facilitate colleagues’ growth into the role. You will work on projects and with colleagues from across the RSK Group.

Key responsibilities (which will be supported and supervised) will include:

• Baseline data collection (from NMI / NMS archives, site visits, survey etc.)
• Contribute to or preparation of technical documents (AIAs, EIARs, Method Statements and Risk Assessments - RAMS)
• Prepare fee proposals for review
• Liaise with clients, consultees and oversee sub-contractors
• Manage project finances with support from colleagues
• Manage your own time whilst working across several projects

Overnight stays may be required at times, but will not be common.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

You must have the following essential criteria:

• Have an understanding of the policy and legislative context for archaeological practice across the island of Ireland
• A degree in archaeology or related subject
• Experience in archaeological consultancy and/or commercial field work
• Experience of report writing, preferably preparing Archaeological Impact Assessment (AIAs) and/or contributing to technical reports
• Full driving licence
• Able and willing to carry out walk-over surveys in an outdoor environment in all weathers
• Willingness to travel to work on projects across the island of Ireland
• Be prepared to join a professional body for the historic environment
• An understanding of the health and safety requirements relevant to the role
• Good organisational & communication skills
• Ability to work under pressure and use your own initiative
• Embrace inclusion and diversity
• Willingness to develop your people skills and attend mental health awareness courses
• Substantial knowledge of MS Office & written/spoken English language

You may meet the following desirable criteria:

• Be eligible to apply for archaeological licenses from the National Monuments Service
• Membership of the Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland (MIAI)
• CIfA membership at PCIfA level or above
• Be able to relate research themes to projects
• Working knowledge of a GIS package
• Post graduate qualification
• Publication record
• EIAR and or Built Heritage experience.
