Applied Physics Specialist (AI Training)
What if your expertise in quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, and thermodynamics could directly shape how AI understands the physical world? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to stress-test cutting-edge AI models — exposing the gaps in their physical reasoning and helping ensure they respect the fundamental laws of the universe.
This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for serious scientists. No AI background required — just deep domain mastery and a rigorous, analytical mind.
- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote
- Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
What You'll Do
- Design PhD-level physics problems — craft advanced, open-ended problems requiring multi-step reasoning, mathematical derivation, and deep physical intuition across topics like quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and thermodynamics
- Author rigorous ground-truth solutions — produce step-by-step "golden responses" where every physical constant, unit conversion, and logical step is airtight
- Audit AI-generated physics — evaluate model outputs for physical consistency, identifying where AI "hallucinates" results that violate first principles such as conservation of energy or momentum
- Refine AI reasoning — provide structured, expert feedback to improve how models apply physics-informed constraints, boundary conditions, and governing equations
- Document failure modes — systematically record where and how AI reasoning breaks down, contributing to research-grade benchmarks used by leading AI labs
Who You Are
- PhD completed or in final stages in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
- Deep command of the core pillars: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
- Exceptional ability to explain complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations in clear, structured English
- Uncompromising attention to detail — units, scientific notation, and logical proof structure matter to you
- Self-directed and reliable when working independently on technical tasks
- No prior AI or machine learning experience required
Nice to Have
- Experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance for technical content
- Proficiency with computational tools such as Python (NumPy/SciPy), MATLAB, or COMSOL
- Background in research-level benchmarking or academic problem design
