Employment Hero is seeking a Senior Software/Backend Engineer to build and scale the systems behind our Employment Operating System, solving complex engineering challenges for millions of users.

We are a remote-first, AI-first company that empowers Engineers to own problems end-to-end, collaborate across squads, and drive meaningful product impact. The role emphasizes technical leadership and high performance in a global team.

Qualifications

• 7+ years in software development
• Strong proficiency in at least one backend language (Ruby, Python, Java, PHP or JS/TS)
• Solid understanding of backend architecture, RESTful APIs, databases and testing
• Strong product mindset and technical judgement
• Ability to influence technical decisions and raise standards
• AI-first mindset and willingness to use AI tools
• Strong English communication and remote-working collaboration

The Role

As a Senior Software/Backend Engineer, you’ll build and scale the systems behind our Employment Operating System, solving complex engineering challenges that impact millions of users.

We’re Looking For Someone Who Combines Strong Backend Expertise, Product Thinking And Independent Problem-solving, While Making a Broader Impact Through Technical Leadership, Collaboration And Helping The Team Succeed. What You’ll Do

• Own complex problems end-to-end, from understanding customer needs and designing solutions to development, testing and production deployment.
• Build and scale reliable backend services, RESTful APIs and integrations.
• Drive technical decisions, balancing performance, scalability, maintainability and product impact.
• Leverage AI coding agents to accelerate delivery while maintaining high engineering standards.
• Elevate your team’s performance by influencing technical decisions, sharing expertise, mentoring Engineers and continuously improving engineering practices.
• Collaborate across Product and Engineering, challenge assumptions and help your squad deliver better product outcomes..
  
  

What We’re Looking For

• Senior-level engineering expertise, typically 7+ years in software development, with proven experience delivering complex solutions in production.
• Strong proficiency in at least one backend language, such as Ruby, Python, Java, PHP or JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Solid understanding of backend architecture, RESTful APIs, databases, system design and automated testing.
• Strong product mindset and technical judgement, with the ability to independently solve ambiguous problems and make pragmatic trade-offs.
• Team-level impact, with a proven ability to influence technical decisions, raise engineering standards and help other Engineers grow.
• An AI-first mindset, with experience or a strong willingness to use AI coding agents to improve software delivery.
• Good English communication skills, a proactive approach and the ability to thrive in a global, remote-first team.
  
  

We primarily build our applications using Ruby. Ruby experience isn’t required, and we’ll support you in developing the necessary skills when you join.
