Job summary

Shippit is seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to set direction and lead our AWS cloud platform. You will partner with software/data engineers and product teams to simplify and scale technology, driving cross-team adoption and faster product delivery.

You will shape the platform's future, improving reliability, performance, security and developer experience while delivering business value. Strong AWS, IaC, and GitOps expertise are essential.

Qualifications

• Experience owning core AWS services (VPC, EC2, IAM) in production.
• Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with Terraform or CloudFormation.
• Containerised platform in production on a public cloud.
• GitOps tooling with Argo CD or Flux CD.
• Proven multi-account AWS environment experience.
• Cloud-native architecture balancing availability, reliability, security and cost.
• Observability stacks like ELK; OpenTelemetry is a bonus.
• Comfort with a polyglot stack (Node.js, Golang or Ruby).
• Experience in platform engineering in regulated industries is desirable.
• Prior experience in application/software development is desirable.

THE ROLE & THE TEAM

As a Senior Platform Engineer you will set direction and provide technical leadership across Shippit’s AWS cloud platform. You’ll work with experienced software engineers, data engineers and product teams to simplify and scale our technology, driving cross-team adoption and accelerating product delivery.

This role is not just about infrastructure. You’ll shape the future of Shippit’s platform and infrastructure. Improve reliability, performance, security and developer experience while ensuring our investments deliver business value.

DAY TO DAY (ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES)

• Build and operate our internal platform as a service. Work with product and engineering teams to ensure their platform and infrastructure requirements are met to deliver great customer outcomes.
• Drive adoption and simplification of our technology choices, ensuring that the technology investments we choose deliver value.
• Design and implement infrastructure as code solutions that build and scale our AWS platform.
• Contribute to ADRs and RFCs for our cloud platform and work as a roaming solutions architect for teams building solutions upon it.
• Embody best practices, continuous improvement, technical excellence and bias for action.
• Lend expertise for production support, root cause analysis and post-mortem.
  

WHAT YOU NEED TO HAVE TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE ROLE

• Experience in ownership of core AWS services (VPC, EC2, IAM) in production.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) in Terraform or CloudFormation.
• Experience delivering a containerised platform in production on a public cloud.
• Working knowledge of GitOps tooling such as Argo CD or Flux CD, with the ability to implement and own a declarative deployment workflow.
• Proven experience managing a multi-account AWS environment.
• Demonstrable experience delivering cloud-native architecture to achieve measured balance in availability, reliability, security and cost efficiency.
• Familiarity with observability stacks like ELK and LGTM. OpenTelemetry experience is a bonus.
• Comfort working in a polyglot programming environment, aided by LLM assisted tools. Experience working with Node.js, Golang or Ruby is a must.
• Experience working in platform engineering in a highly regulated industry, such as banking and finance, medical & health or similar regulated industry would be highly desirable.
• Prior experience in an application or software development role would be highly desirable.
