Job summary

Our client, a leading multinational coal mining company operating in Kalimantan Utara, seeks a Geotechnical Engineer to manage geotechnical design, monitoring, and risk mitigation for safe, cost-effective operations.

You will evaluate rock/soil properties, develop slope designs, and implement monitoring systems while coordinating with planning, HSE, and survey teams. Strong communication and field experience are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Geological or Geotechnical Engineering.
• 8–10 years of geotechnical engineering experience in open-pit coal mining.
• POP and POM certification.
• Strong knowledge of rock mechanics, soil mechanics, and slope stability analysis.
• Experienced with geotechnical software such as Slide, GeoStudio, Rocscience.
• Familiarity with geotechnical monitoring systems.
• Experience in tropical, high rainfall mining environments is preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for reports and collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Conduct geotechnical investigations to characterize soil and rock properties and groundwater.
• Analyze rock mass characteristics using classifications (RMR, GSI, SMR).
• Develop and review pit slope designs including bench and ramp.
• Design and assess waste dump stability, haul roads, and embankments.
• Perform geotechnical analysis and modelling using appropriate software.
• Develop 2D/3D geotechnical models to predict slope behaviour.
• Identify geotechnical hazards and mitigation measures.
• Establish and manage slope monitoring systems (prism, slope radar, LiDAR).
• Analyze monitoring data and implement TARPs.
• Provide daily technical guidance to mine operations and drill & blast teams.
• Assess groundwater and rainfall impact on slope stability and drainage solutions.
• Prepare daily, weekly, monthly geotechnical reports and maintain records.
• Coordinate with mine planning, operations, HSE, and survey teams.

About the role:

To ensure safe, stable, and cost-effective mining operationsby managing all geotechnical aspects including slopedesign, ground control, monitoring, and risk mitigation incompliance with Indonesian mining regulations andcompany safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Conduct geotechnical investigations to characterizesoil and rock properties, material behavior,geological structures, and groundwater assessment,including supervision of drilling, logging, and sampling activities.
• Analyze rock mass characteristics, geologicalstructures, and subsurface conditions usingaccepted classification systems (RMR, GSI, SMR).
• Develop and review pit slope designs includingbench, ramp, and overall slope angles.
• Design and assess waste dump stability, haul roads,and embankments.
• Perform geotechnical analysis and modelling usingappropriate software (limit equilibrium / numericalmethods).
• Develop 2D/3D geotechnical models to predict slopebehavior under mining and environmentalconditions.
• Identify geotechnical hazards such as slopeinstability, landslides, weak zones, and groundwateringress.
• Conduct risk assessments and recommendmitigation measures and ground improvementsolutions.
• Establish and manage slope monitoring systemsincluding prism monitoring, slope radar, and LiDAR.
• Analyze monitoring data and implement TriggerAction Response Plans (TARP).
• Provide early warning and recommendations forpotential slope failures.
• Conduct regular pit inspections to ensurecompliance with geotechnical design parameters.
• Provide daily technical guidance to mine operationsand drill & blast teams.
• Assess groundwater and rainfall impact on slopestability and recommend drainage and dewateringsystems.
• Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly geotechnicalreports and maintain proper documentation.
• Maintain geotechnical database includinginvestigation data, laboratory results, and monitoringrecords.
• Coordinate with mine planning, operations, HSE,and survey teams to ensure alignment with designand safety requirements.
• Support internal audits, inspections, andgovernment regulatory compliance requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Geological Engineering, orGeotechnical Engineering.
• Minimum 8–10 years of experience in geotechnicalengineering in open-pit coal mining.
• Minimum POP and POM certification
• Strong knowledge of rock mechanics, soilmechanics, and slope stability analysis
• Experience with geotechnical software such asSlide, GeoStudio, Rocscience or equivalent
