Job description

Indonesia plays an important role in global agricultural and forest commodity supply chains, including palm oil, cocoa, coffee, natural rubber, timber, rattan, and other non-timber forest products (NTFPs). These commodities contribute significantly to economic development, rural livelihoods, employment, and trade. However, their production and supply chains are also associated with environmental and social challenges, including deforestation, ecosystem conversion, biodiversity loss, greenhouse gas emissions, and social risks.

Transforming commodity sectors requires action across the entire supply chain, from sustainable production and landscape management to processing, sourcing, trade, and consumption. Stronger engagement with downstream companies, buyers, retailers, business associations, and other market actors is essential to increase demand for responsibly produced commodities and encourage improved sourcing, traceability, legality, certification, and deforestation- and conversion-free (DCF) practices.

Both domestic and global markets play important roles in driving this transformation. Domestic market engagement can strengthen responsible sourcing practices among Indonesian companies, while global markets can provide additional incentives through evolving sustainability, traceability, and due diligence requirements. Connecting producers and landscapes with responsible domestic and international markets can help improve market access and strengthen incentives for sustainable production.

WWF-Indonesia aims to strengthen market transformation for selected agricultural and forest commodities by engaging companies and market actors, promoting responsible sourcing, improving supply chain transparency and traceability, facilitating multi-stakeholder collaboration, and linking market demand with sustainable production and landscape-level interventions. These efforts contribute to WWF-Indonesia's broader 2030 ambition to promote more sustainable, responsible, and deforestation- and conversion-free commodity supply chains.

To accelerate the adoption of DCF commodities, the position will contribute to increasing awareness and knowledge of DCF among industry stakeholders, including the private sector, government, and consumers. This includes supporting the implementation of a DCF shipment proof of concept and developing pathways for DCF recognition in global markets, such as China.

The position will also support national and global trade and market initiatives to reduce environmental and social threats through improved sustainable commodity practices, as well as the development and implementation of strategies to accelerate landscape approaches for more sustainable and responsibly produced forest commodities.
