Job summary

The West Suburban YMCA is seeking a certified Basketball Referee to oversee games in our adult summer league. You will enforce IAABO rules, manage on-court situations, and help foster a fun, safe and inclusive environment for local players.

Shifts are Tuesday evenings in June and July from 6PM-10PM. Prior IAABO certification and experience in sports are preferred. A free YMCA membership is included as part of this role.

Qualifications

  • IAABO Certified by International Association of Approved Basketball Officials, Inc.
  • Experience in sports as player and coach/instructor preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle disputes with composure and sound judgment.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Arrive at scheduled shifts at least 10 minutes prior to start.
  • Enforce rules per IAABO standards and Youth League guidelines.
  • Ensure fair treatment of all teams and maintain safety of participants and spectators.
  • Support DEIB initiatives and represent the organization professionally.
  • Maintain final scores and participate in required meetings/training.

Salary Range: $35.00 To $40.00 Hourly

Position Summary

To oversee athletic facilities, including participants and equipment, during basketball games. To ensure that emphasis in Y sports programs is always on participation, inclusion, fun and fair play. Exhibit values that will lead to a positive experience in sports.

Essential Functions
  • Arrives to scheduled shifts at least 10 minutes prior to scheduled start.
  • Enforce all rules in accordance with IAABO standards and in accordance with the Youth League. Demonstrate strong conflict management skills by remaining composed and using sound judgment to de-escalate disputes, disagreements with calls, and heightened emotions during gameplay.
  • Ensure all teams treated equally and fairly in accordance with sport rules.
  • Help in always maintaining safety of program participants and spectators.
  • Actively supports the organization’s DEIB commitments by modeling equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging in daily work. Recommend and helps implement strategies and initiatives that advance the organization’s diversity goals.
  • Maintains final scores as required.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as needed.
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • The principal objective will be to conduct/referee the program in a manner that will fulfill the YMCA’s mission, guided by our core values ofcaring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
Qualifications

  • Experience in sports as both a player and coach/instructor preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle disputes related to calls and player conduct with composure and sound judgment.
  • Committing to support and further our equity-centered work as an organization. Actively supports all DEIB efforts.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Requeseted Certifications: CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid.
Abuse Risk Management
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with youth.
  • Attend required abuse risk management training.
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising youth.
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
Physical Demands
  • Sufficient strength, agility, mobility and endurance to run up and down a full sized basketball court.
  • Climbing, crouching, standing, sitting on floor, kneeling, carrying (50 lbs), pushing, lifting (50 lbs), running and walking.
