Job summary

JNL Consulting Limited is recruiting an experienced SQL Specialist / Database Developer for a 12-month contract in Hong Kong. You will design, optimize, and maintain backend database architecture, including complex SQL queries, stored procedures, triggers, and UDFs, working closely with IT leadership and applications teams.

Responsibilities include tuning performance, building ETL/ELT pipelines, and supporting data migrations between legacy systems and modern platforms.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of hands-on database development experience.
• Experience with MS SQL Server, Oracle PL/SQL, or PostgreSQL.
• Expert in Stored Procedures, query profiling, and indexing strategies.
• Experience with ETL tools (SSIS, Informatica, or Python-based pipelines).
• Experience in insurance, banking, or financial services domain is advantageous.

About the Opportunity

We are partnering with a leading global insurer to recruit an experienced SQL Specialist / Database Developer on an initial 12-month contract basis. Working closely with the IT leadership and applications engineering teams, you will play a critical role in developing, optimizing, and maintaining backend database architecture, complex SQL queries, Stored Procedures, Triggers, and User-Defined Functions (UDFs).

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain high-performance complex SQL queries, Stored Procedures, Triggers, and User-Defined Functions (UDFs).

Conduct comprehensive database tuning, execution plan analysis, index optimization, and bottleneck remediation to ensure system performance across high-volume transactions.

Build, automate, and monitor data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL/ELT) pipelines and backend batch processing jobs.

Support data migration, database schema modifications, and synchronization between legacy core systems and modern data platforms.

Collaborate with business analysts, solution architects, and application developers to validate data models and deliver backend requirements.

Maintain rigorous documentation for database design, version-control scripts, and operational procedures.

Requirements

Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.

4+ years of hands-on database development experience with MS SQL Server, Oracle (PL/SQL), or PostgreSQL.

Expert-level command of writing and optimizing complex Stored Procedures, query profiling, and index strategies.

Solid experience with ETL tools (e.g., SSIS, Informatica, or Python-based pipelines) and scheduled batch scripting.

Prior technical experience within the insurance, banking, or financial services domain is highly advantageous.

Strong troubleshooting instincts, attention to data accuracy, and the ability to operate independently in a project-driven environment.

Fluency in English and Cantonese. Immediate or short-notice availability is strongly preferred.
