Job summary

UNSW Sydney invites applications for a Level B/C position focusing on environmental microbiology and planetary health. The role encompasses establishing competitive research programs, teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and developing collaborations with government, industry and end-users.

The appointee will mentor HDR students, secure funding, and contribute to curriculum development while upholding UNSW values and safety standards.

Qualifications

• PhD in environmental microbiology, microbial ecology, microbiome science, environmental biotechnology, microbial genomics, plant or soil microbiology, infectious disease ecology, One Health or closely related discipline.
• Research track record appropriate to career stage in environmental or planetary health microbiology with high quality outputs and potential for leadership.
• Experience with microbial or microbiome-based solutions for global change (e.g., bioremediation, soil health, ecosystem restoration).
• Independent research vision that complements UNSW strengths and enables collaboration across networks.

Responsibilities

• Establish internationally competitive research in environmental microbiology and produce high-quality outputs and competitive grants.
• Develop understanding of microbiome connectivity across environmental systems with planetary health focus.
• Collaborate across disciplines and develop partnerships with government, industry, and research end-users.
• Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in microbiology, environmental biotechnology, and related areas.
• Lead curriculum innovation and potentially coordinate new courses.
• Mentor HDR students and contribute to a collegial and safe research culture.
• Demonstrate a teaching philosophy and provide robust assessment and feedback.
• Contribute to school meetings, seminars, and university service.
• Align with the Code of Conduct and university values.
