Job summary

Canonical is hiring a Design Manager to lead and contribute to our Visual Design practice for brand and site experiences. This hands-on leadership role focuses on people management, delivery ownership, and strategic thinking across global, remote teams.

You will guide design systems, collaborate with Marketing, Web Engineering and Design Systems, and drive cross-department initiatives while maintaining high-quality visual solutions that align with Canonical’s open-source mission.

Qualifications

• Portfolio demonstrating excellence in leading design process and execution (visual emphasis)
• Experience managing complex projects and a design team while hands-on
• Advanced knowledge of visual design principles (typography, layout, color, systems)
• Strong processes understanding and ability to manage ambiguity and competing priorities
• Clear point of view with openness to critique and usability/Accessibility focus
• Commitment to skills development and mentorship
• Passion for technology and open source ethos
• Excellent written and spoken English
• Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events

Responsibilities

• Lead and contribute to visual design across brand and site experiences
• Collaborate with design systems and sites teams to influence UI across digital experiences
• Drive innovation, set direction, maintain quality, and support team growth
• Lead by example; provide direct feedback and hands-on design when needed
• Oversee workflows, production processes, and cross-department coordination
• Grow design culture and communicate the value of design across the organization
