Job summary

Lumentum is seeking an experienced Engineer Principal, Mechanical to lead the design, development and optimization of complex opto-mechanical systems for our cutting-edge optical products. This role involves driving advanced mechanical engineering solutions from concept to production, ensuring robust performance, reliability, and manufacturability.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Ph.D. preferred.
• 10+ years in mechanical design and analysis, preferably in optical/high-tech manufacturing.
• Expert in 3D CAD and PDM/PLM systems (SolidWorks emphasis).
• Strong experience with ANSYS and CFD/thermal analysis tools.
• Knowledge of materials, heat transfer, vibrations, and precision design.
• Experience with DFM/ DFA/ DFR principles.
• Proven ability to lead projects and mentor teams.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills.
• Experience in optical alignment/packaging is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and analysis of opto-mechanical assemblies for new product introductions and enhancements.
• Perform FEA, CFD, and tolerance analyses to ensure performance and reliability.
• Develop detailed mechanical specs, documentation, and test plans.
• Collaborate with optical, electrical, manufacturing and program management teams.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance within the team.
• Drive material/component selection and qualification for manufacturability.
• Identify innovative mechanical solutions to improve performance and cost.
• Oversee design validation and prototype testing and failure analysis.
• Stay current with industry trends and best practices in mechanical and optical systems.
