Job summary

Don Nelson Recruitment Limited is seeking a Head of Engineering for an Investment Banking technology function in Hong Kong. You will provide technical leadership across the full SDLC, shaping real-time, high-throughput systems and driving DevOps maturity.

You will mentor engineers, advocate TDD, and partner with stakeholders to translate complex business needs into robust software. Mandarin preferred; require 15+ years in IB software and a BS or higher in CS.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or related discipline.
• Minimum 15 years of software engineering experience in investment banking.
• Proven expertise in real-time, high-throughput systems.
• Deep mastery of Java, Spring, Docker, SQL, Linux, shell scripting, and CI/CD tools (Git/Bamboo/Jenkins).
• Excellent communication with non-technical stakeholders.
• Mandarin proficiency strongly preferred.
• Interest in Cash Equities workflows and end-to-end trading system architecture.
• Strong multitasking and ability to work under pressure.

Provide technical leadership to the engineering team across all stages of software development, ranging from requirement analysis to production capacity planning.

Continuously guide and advise the team on best practices for software engineering and application support.

Mentor junior developers through direct training, peer coaching, and leading by example.

Drive test-driven development (TDD) practices and expand test automation across the team.

Execute hands‑on coding, testing, and troubleshooting for critical or time‑sensitive deliverables.

Evaluate emerging technologies, including new programming languages and deployment models, to assess their value for the team and firm.

Champion and accelerate the team's transition toward a mature DevOps operating model.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or a related discipline.

At least 15 years of software engineering experience within an investment banking environment.

Proven expertise in designing and building real‑time, high‑throughput systems.

Deep technical mastery of Java, Spring, Docker, SQL, Linux, shell scripting, and CI/CD tools such as Git, Bamboo, or Jenkins.

Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical issues and business impacts to non‑technical stakeholders.

High proficiency in Mandarin is strongly preferred.
