Job summary

Semester.co.uk is seeking a dedicated residential care supervisor in the Tees Valley area. The role entails providing guidance and boundaries for looked after children, maintaining a safe home environment and coordinating with external services to achieve positive outcomes.

You will lead a team, cover shifts including nights, and participate in staff development. A Level 3 in Children and Young People or 2+ years’ residential care experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support looked after children and young people in a safe, stable residential environment, individually and in groups.
  • Safeguard and advocate for children to ensure care standards meet or exceed National Minimum Standards.
  • Liaise with Local Authorities, schools, health and professionals to improve outcomes for residents.
  • Lead, supervise and support junior staff delivering 24/7 care in line with the Home’s standards.
  • Assist management with policies, procedures and record keeping to ensure efficient resource use and compliance.

This position will include full day sleep shifts.

Preferably you will have a level 3 in Children and Young People or over 2 years experience working with young people in residential care.

Job Purpose & Objectives
  • To support, assist, provide guidance and boundaries for looked after children and young people, in a safe and stable residential environment, on an individual and group basis.
  • To actively safeguard, promote the welfare and advocate on behalf of children and young people to ensure that the quality of care provided exceeds National Minimum Standards.
  • To liaise with senior management and external parties such as Local Authorities, schools, health, and other professionals to achieve best outcomes for residents.
  • To lead, supervise and support staff members at junior levels as they provide round the clock care and support that is consistent with the Home’s quality standards and Statement of Purpose.
  • To assist the Home’s Management team in ensuring that policies, procedures and record keeping measures are adhered to, and resources are deployed effectively and efficiently, so that the Home meets the standards and expectations of its Statement of Purpose.
  • To assist management in maintaining a competent, safe, motivated & confident staff team.
  • To actively promote the Home’s equal opportunity and anti-discriminatory practices.
Specific Duties & Key Responsibilities

To meet the needs of our young people by:

  • Ensuring all children and young people’s care plans are followed effectively, addressing care, education, social, emotional, cultural, therapeutic and health needs.
  • Acting as a Key Worker for specific individuals, assuming principal responsibility for reviewing, implementing and amending the relevant childcare plans.
  • Delivering a high standard of childcare practice and exercising appropriate levels of guidance and control over children and young people at all times, maintaining the security and ethos of the Home.
  • Recording all significant observations and contributing to the ongoing assessment of children and young people’s needs through active participation in meetings with staff members, parents, families, carers and other professionals.
  • Maintaining the highest levels of confidentiality.

To meet the needs of colleagues by:

  • Assisting the Home’s management to induct & mentor new staff, ensuring all staff at junior levels are following development plans and are clear about expectations and objectives.
  • Leading teams and shifts, and ensuring adherence to company policies, procedures and operational guidelines, to maintain the smooth running of the home and effective allocation of resources.
  • Participating fully in the Home’s rota system, to cover various shifts including early mornings, late evenings and sleep-ins, on weekdays, weekends and Bank Holidays, ensuring adequate staffing levels that meet the needs of the Home and its residents.
  • Promoting an organisational culture which values every team member’s contribution and balances confidentiality with transparency; direction and control with delegation and individual initiative; and innovation with the requirement to follow established procedures.
  • Leading and/or supporting other staff when physical interventions are required to protect health and safety.
  • Planning and facilitating individual and group pursuits and social activities, participating in occasional residential camps and engaging in outdoor activities as required
