Job summary

Major Recruitment Ashford is seeking an experienced Yard Supervisor for a site in Sittingbourne, Kent. This hands-on leadership role involves guiding Yard Operatives, maintaining safety standards, and ensuring efficient work flow for incoming and outgoing loads.

You will oversee labeling, paperwork and quality checks while supporting day-to-day operations in a fast-paced yard environment. 8:00am–4:00pm, Mon–Fri, with occasional earlier starts; £17.50 per hour starting rate with final rate

Qualifications

• Previous experience in a yard/warehouse or similar industrial environment.
• Experience supervising, coordinating or leading a small team.
• Strong health and safety knowledge and safe working practices.
• Ability to take responsibility and make decisions in a busy operational environment.
• Physically able to work outdoors in yard conditions.
• Professional and customer-focused approach.

Responsibilities

• Maintain high standards of health & safety, housekeeping and professionalism at all times.
• Oversee yard operations and ensure smooth flow of work through pre and post processes.
• Provide professional, helpful service to customers and visitors.
• Ensure correct labeling and paperwork accompanies all work.
• Build loads safely and securely, applying banding where required.
• Support and deploy Yard Operatives according to operations needs.
• Be flexible and assist across different yard areas as required.
• Report safety concerns or issues to the Operations Manager promptly.
• Inspect incoming work for quality control parameters (vent holes, contaminants, oversized items).
• Ensure outgoing work has proper paperwork and meets quality standards.

Yard Supervisor

Location: Sittingbourne, Kent

Starting Salary: £17.50 per hour

Hours: 8:00am - 4:00pm, Monday to Friday

Flexibility: Occasional earlier starts and later finishes may be required

The Opportunity

We are currently recruiting for an experienced and proactive Yard Supervisor to join a operation in Sittingbourne.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced yard environment, takes pride in maintaining high safety standards, and has the confidence to lead by example. You will play a key role in ensuring the yard operates safely, efficiently and professionally, while helping to deliver an excellent experience for customers and colleagues.

The Yard Supervisor will oversee the day-to-day flow of work through the yard, supporting the Yard Operatives and ensuring incoming and outgoing work is handled correctly, safely and to the required standards.

Key Responsibilities

• High standards of health & safety, housekeeping and professionalism are maintained at all times.
• Yard operations run efficiently, with work moving smoothly through the pre and post processes.
• Customers and visitors receive a professional, helpful and welcoming service.
• All work is correctly labelled and accompanied by the appropriate paperwork.
• Loads are built safely and securely, with banding applied where required to both incoming and outgoing work.
• Yard Operatives are supported, directed and deployed effectively according to operational requirements.
• Team members remain flexible and assist across different areas of the yard when required.
• Any safety concerns, damaged or unsuitable work, weight discrepancies or other issues are reported promptly to the Operations Manager.
• Visitors comply with site requirements, including wearing the correct PPE, signing in and being safely directed to the appropriate loading area.
• Incoming work is inspected for suitability for quality control, including checking for:
  • Adequate vent and drainage holes
  • Paint or other contaminants
  • Items requiring powder coating or shot blasting
  • Oversized work that may not be suitable for the relevant process
  • Oversized or unsuitable work is identified and clearly labelled, with the main office informed immediately.
• Outgoing work is checked to ensure it has the correct paperwork, is handled safely and meets the required quality standards.
• Any damage, discrepancies or quality concerns are identified and escalated without delay.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

• Previous experience in a yard, warehouse, manufacturing, engineering, galvanizing or similar industrial environment.
• Experience supervising, coordinating or leading a small team would be highly advantageous.
• A strong understanding of health & safety and safe working practices.
• The confidence to take responsibility and make decisions in a busy operational environment.
• Excellent attention to detail, particularly when checking work , - .. ........ ....... ... ... ... not ?
• A professional and customer-focused approach.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with colleagues, customers and site visitors.
• A flexible attitude and willingness to get involved and support the wider team.
• The ability to work in a physically demanding, outdoor/yard-based environment.
• A proactive approach to identifying and reporting issues before they become problems.
