Job summary

Durham Gilesgate Primary School is seeking a happy, enthusiastic After School Club Assistant to run and supervise activities for pupils aged 5 to 11, 15:00–18:00, term-time only. The role is a temporary contract with a review at the end of July 2027 and starts January 2027 or as soon as possible.

An enhanced DBS check is essential. The post is not open to job share, and salary may be adjusted during school closures in line with NJC Green Book.

Qualifications

• Enhanced DBS check required.
• Experience with children aged 5–11 preferred.
• Ability to supervise and deliver safe, engaging after‑school activities.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a safe and stimulating play environment for children.
• Assist planning, preparing and delivering age‑appropriate activities.
• Supervise children during after‑school sessions and monitor wellbeing and behaviour.
• Attend to tea time refreshments and safeguarding procedures.
• Carry out any other duties to support the club.

Durham Gilesgate Primary School requires a happy, enthusiastic and motivated After School Club Assistant. We organise and run a successful after school club that is located on site and which benefits from our school facilities.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about all aspects of childcare and education, and is able to bring new ideas and assist in running an After School Club for pupils between the ages of 5 and 11. The successful candidate will supervise children attending the club and provide appropriate activities whilst securing their safety, monitoring well-being and ensuring good behaviour.?

Key duties and responsibilities:

• To maintain a safe and stimulating play environment and to assist with the developing opportunities which encourage children’s social, physical, intellectual, creative and emotional development through play.
• To ensure the provision offers a safe and stimulating play environment.
• To assist with the planning preparing and delivery of activities, which meet children’s individual and developmental needs.
• To work face to face with the children registered with the club
• To supervise tea time refreshments for the children.
• To follow guidelines and procedures for safeguarding in accordance our polices and procedures.
• To carry out any other duties, which will be seen to enhance the work of the After School Club.

An enhanced DBS check is an essential part of the selection and recruitment process.

This post is not open to job share.

This position is paid whole time with retainer adjustments applied to periods of school closure. You will not be required to work during the school closure periods however your salary in these periods will be adjusted accordingly in line with the retainer regulations as specified in the National Joint Council (NJC) Green Book agreement.
