Job summary

Amey is seeking a Workshop Technician to join its Surrey Heath Depot team on a permanent basis. The role focuses on maintaining and repairing heavy goods vehicles to DVSA standards, with duties spanning diagnostics, component overhauls, and routine maintenance.

The position is on-site at the Surrey Heath depot (GU15 3DF) and includes ongoing professional development. Candidates should have experience with municipal and waste fleet maintenance, COSHH awareness, and a relevant HGV qualification or

Qualifications

  • Experience in maintaining and repairing heavy goods vehicles, with municipal, commercial, and waste fleet maintenance desired.
  • COSHH awareness and environmental best practices.
  • City & Guilds, IRTEC, or NVQ certification.
  • Category C HGV license desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Utilising advanced diagnostic tools to identify faults and perform repairs.
  • Dismantling and overhauling vehicle components.
  • Carrying out routine maintenance to meet DVSA standards.
  • Completing maintenance records using tablets/PDA devices.
  • Conducting road tests to verify safety and performance.

Job description

Title: Workshop Technician

We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a permanent HGV Tehcnician to join our dynamic Surrey County Council team at our Surrey Heath Depot (GU15 3DF). This role will be carried out onsite. This position offers a competitive salary and overtime.

The HGV Technician/Mechanic is responsible for ensuring the safety and reliability of our fleet through comprehensive vehicle maintenance and repairs. This role involves conducting routine vehicle maintenance to meet DVSA standards, diagnosing and resolving issues with various Heavy Goods Vehicles and equipment, and preparing all vehicles for MOT inspections and regular six-weekly preventative maintenance checks.

Additionally, the technician must ensure all repairs are performed to high standards, guaranteeing compliance with highway safety regulations and preventing prohibition notices. The position includes maintaining a fleet that consists of core waste vehicles, sweepers, food waste collection vehicles, and light commercial vans.

What You’ll Do
  • Utilising advanced diagnostic tools to accurately identify faults and execute effective repairs as and when defects are reported.
  • Dismantling and overhauling various components of vehicles to restore them to optimal working condition.
  • Completing the maintenance of diverse vehicles and plant equipment, ensuring all units operate efficiently.
  • Utilising tablets and PDA devices to meticulously complete and maintain documentation, including job cards and preventative maintenance inspections.
  • Conducting testing of equipment and tools, with mechanics monitoring performance in the workshop.
  • Integrating health and safety protocols into daily practices while ensuring all areas are clean and safe.
  • Committing to ongoing professional development by upskilling with the latest technologies in the field.
  • Addressing and resolving nonconformance issues effectively.
  • Performing road tests on vehicles to confirm their safety and performance.
  • Assisting with roadside vehicle breakdowns, providing timely support to minimise downtime.
  • Adhering to health and safety policy procedures in all work practices.

What You’ll Bring
  • Experience in maintaining and repairing heavy goods vehicles, with additional experience in municipal, commercial, and waste fleet maintenance being highly desirable
  • Proven experience in vehicle repairs, adhering to the highest safety and compliance standards, is essential for this role.
  • Awareness of COSHH regulations and environmental best practices.
  • City & Guilds, IRTEC, or NVQ certification
