Job summary

Capita is recruiting an experienced engineering professional to mentor and develop the next generation of Royal Navy engineers at HMS Sultan. You will deliver high-quality training in Mechanical Craft and Fabrication, helping trainees develop core engineering competencies with practical hand skills.

This training-focused role provides full trainer development on site; Level 3 Teaching Qualification or equivalent is preferred, and prior teaching is not required.

Qualifications

• Strong engineering background with mechanical or fabrication experience.
• Hands-on workshop experience using hand tools and machinery.
• Proficient in IT (hardware/software).
• Willingness to learn and develop as a trainer; full training provided.

Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality training in Mechanical Craft and Fabrication.
• Coach and mentor trainees; provide constructive feedback.
• Teach interpretation of basic technical drawings and safe workshop practices.
• Promote health and safety and support trainee progression.

Help Shape the Next Generation of Royal Navy Engineers

Play a vital role in preparing skilled personnel for the front line-faster.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced engineering professional to make a lasting impact by mentoring and developing the next generation of Royal Navy engineers. You'll use your industry expertise to coach trainees, helping them build essential engineering hand skills and confidence within a structured learning environment.

This is a training-focused role, but prior teaching experience is not required. Full teacher training delivered on site and ongoing support will be provided to help you succeed-what matters most is your passion, enthusiasm, and ability to engage and inspire learners throughout their journey.

Full-time role, 37.5 hours a week (Monday - Friday)

HMS Sultan

Due to the nature of this role, you must be eligible for UK Security Clearance at SC level.

What you will be doing

You will deliver high-quality training in Mechanical Craft and Fabrication, supporting trainees in developing core engineering competencies. This will include:

• Introducing and developing practical hand skills, including fitting and filing
• Teaching the interpretation and understanding of basic technical drawings
• Providing instruction on the safe use of workshop equipment
• Promoting and embedding strong workshop Health & Safety practices
• Supporting trainees' progress through coaching, mentoring, and constructive feedback
• A strong engineering background (mechanical or fabrication experience preferred) certified to a minimum of Level 3 or above
• Practical workshop experience and confidence using hand tools and machinery
• Be proficient in the use of IT (hardware/software)

You will also have A willingness to learn and continuously develop as a trainer (full training provided) as well as having strong communication skills and a passion for developing others

• Level 3 Teaching Qualification / DCTS Defence Train The Trainer Course or equivalent (successful completion)
• Previous instructional experience in a military or civilian engineering environment (ideally within last 5 years)

This role is offered on a term time basis working 45 weeks per year, with non-working weeks taken 2 weeks at Christmas and Easter and 3 weeks in August. The salary will therefore be pro rata'd and calculated to include contractual annual leave entitlement and bank holidays.
