Job description

The Workshop Fabrication Supervisor is responsible for the safe and effective day-to-day management of fabrication activities within the engineering workshop.

The role ensures fabricated equipment, pipework, structural steelwork, repair components and refurbishment activities are completed in accordance with approved engineering standards, quality requirements, site procedures and delivery schedules.

The position supports plant reliability, maintenance performance and engineering improvement activities through effective supervision of workshop personnel, contractors and fabrication resources.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Safety, Health & Compliance: Ensure fabrication activities are completed safely and compliantly, following site procedures, permit requirements, engineering standards, and all relevant statutory and pressure equipment regulations.

  • Workshop Supervision: Supervise workshop teams and contractors, allocate resources, monitor progress, and support workforce development to ensure fabrication work is delivered safely, efficiently and on schedule.
  • Fabrication & Engineering Delivery: Coordinate fabrication, repair and refurbishment work for maintenance, shutdowns and projects, ensuring all activities follow approved drawings, specifications and procedures while supporting breakdown response and asset improvement.
  • Quality Assurance & Control: Maintain quality assurance and control across workshop fabrication by ensuring procedures, qualifications, inspections, material traceability and quality records are in place, with fabricated equipment meeting required standards before release.
  • Resource & Asset Management: Manage workshop tools, equipment, materials and stock availability while identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, productivity and cost performance.
  • Continuous Improvement: Support continuous improvement by improving workshop processes, layouts and working practices, contributing to reliability projects and RCA investigations, and supporting Management Of Change where fabrication or engineering changes are required.
Experience and Qualifications:
  • Apprenticeship and/or NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering, Fabrication, Welding or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in fabrication, welding or mechanical engineering within an industrial environment.
  • Previous supervisory experience within a fabrication or maintenance workshop.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications and fabrication standards.
  • Working knowledge of welding processes, fabrication techniques and engineering materials.
  • Strong understanding of quality control and inspection requirements.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, compliance and engineering excellence.
  • Good planning, organisational and communication skills.
  • HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Experience within a chemical, process, heavy manufacturing or Upper Tier COMAH environment.
  • Knowledge of pressure systems, pipework fabrication and structural steel fabrication.
  • Experience with SAP Plant Maintenance.
  • Experience supporting shutdowns and major maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of Management Of Change processes.
  • Experience managing contractor fabrication resources.
