Balfour Beatty Group is seeking a Works Manager for the Netherton Hub project near Peterhead, Aberdeenshire. You will lead safety, quality and logistics on a major energy infra site, coordinating direct and subcontractor teams to deliver against programme milestones.

The role requires strong HSE leadership, site-setup expertise, and effective collaboration with clients and stakeholders to drive productivity while maintaining high safety standards and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • Experience managing multiple construction activities with direct and subcontract labour.

  • Lead site inductions, toolbox talks, and short interval planning sessions.
  • Drive productivity improvements and report on performance.
  • Support commercial teams with record keeping and change management.
  • Coordinate multiple work fronts to achieve programme targets.

The Netherton Hub is a major new energy infrastructure development located near Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, forming a key part of SSEN Transmission’s multi‑billion‑pound Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) programme and its wider Pathway to 2030 upgrade of the Scottish transmission network.

Designed to strengthen the UK’s ability to transport renewable electricity from the north of Scotland to high‑demand centres nationwide, the hub will incorporate a new High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter station, a 400 kV substation, a 132 kV substation, and associated operational facilities. Once complete, it will enable efficient long‑distance transmission of offshore and onshore renewable energy, supporting both UK and Scottish Government net‑zero targets while delivering significant economic benefits, job creation, and local supply‑chain opportunities.

What you'll be doing
Health, Safety & Environment
  • Ensuring works are carried out in accordance with H&S legislation and approved RAMS
  • Promote and implement Zero Harm and any behavioural safety initiatives
  • Keep up to date with changes in legislation and company procedures and cascade information to the team
  • Ensuring all daily checks and other records are completed
  • Ensure that the right level of resources are on site with the appropriate competence and managed to meet the programme
  • Ensure that the ordering and management of site plant and tools is efficient
  • Awareness of environmental issues and controls and ensuring that specific project controls are in place.
  • Ensuring that Site Inductions, Daily Briefings, Tool Box Talks, Short Interval Control meetings and Task Safety Briefings are carried out to a high standard, are succinct and appropriate
  • Ensure HSEQ procedures are followed
  • Lead a positive safety culture and visibly demonstrate Zero Harm behaviours.
  • Ensure high-risk activities are appropriately planned, controlled and supervised.
  • Lead investigations into incidents, close calls and unsafe conditions and implement corrective actions.
Quality & Reporting
  • Ensure that quality control is implemented
  • Ensure fully comprehensive daily records are produced
  • Provide any reports or investigations required and implement improvements as appropriate.
Logistics
  • Support the development, implementation and monitoring of construction programmes to ensure efficient delivery of site works.
  • Lead site logistics activities including access, traffic management, deliveries, storage and waste management.
  • Ensure plant, labour and materials are available to support construction activities.
  • Ensure that materials are ordered and managed to minimise wastage
  • Ensure that all supervisors are briefed and understand company policies
  • Ensure Black Hat assessments are carried out on all site supervisors
  • Work with the site teams to develop programmes and monitor as necessary
Production & Delivery
  • Lead construction delivery activities to achieve programme and productivity targets.
  • Monitor progress against programme and implement recovery actions where required.
  • Coordinate multiple work fronts to ensure effective sequencing and efficient resource utilisation.
  • Drive short interval planning and performance review processes.
Commercial
  • Support commercial teams through accurate record keeping and performance reporting.
  • Identify productivity improvements and opportunities to reduce cost and waste.
  • Ensure construction activities are delivered in accordance with contractual requirements.
  • Support the management of change and compensation event information where required
Who we're looking for
The Following Experience/qualifications Are Essential
  • Demonstrable experience managing a variety of construction activities using both direct and subcontract labour.
  • Excellent Health & Safety awareness with a demonstrable record of managing sites with an outstanding safety record.
  • Understanding the principles of Zero Harm and the passion and determination to ensure the highest standards are achieved.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with Clients and Stakeholders.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to think and act decisively
  • Experience managing multiple work fronts and subcontractors on complex infrastructure or construction projects.
  • Experience leading site-based delivery teams.
  • Strong understanding of programme delivery, logistics and construction sequencing.
  • Good understanding of commercial awareness and productivity management.
  • Hold a CSCS card.
  • SSSTS or SMSTS qualification
Desirable
  • Experience and knowledge of M&E works.
  • Relevant vocational or construction management qualification.
