Brief Description

Join Our Team as a Health, Safety & Environmental Advisor

Are you passionate about creating safer, healthier, and more sustainable workplaces? We’re looking for an experienced HSE professional to support our Maintenance and Operations Delivery teams. In this role, you’ll ensure compliance with legal and corporate standards, and drive positive cultural and behavioural change in all aspects of health, safety, welfare, and environmental management.

About The Role (External)

We’re looking for a passionate and proactive Workforce Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Advisor to support our Head of Maintenance Delivery and Head of Operations Delivery in driving a culture of safety and sustainability across our teams. In this pivotal role, you’ll provide expert guidance on all workforce health, safety, and environmental matters, ensuring our people are protected and our operations remain compliant and forward-thinking.

You’ll play a key role in gathering, analysing, and interpreting HSE data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement. Your insights will help shape strategic decisions and support the implementation of national safety improvement programmes—where you may also take the lead on designated initiatives.

As a trusted advisor, you’ll guide teams through the investigation and reporting of accidents and incidents, ensuring adherence to the Formal Investigation Process and that all cases are owned by the appropriate Designated Competent Person (DCP). You’ll also coordinate and monitor safety tours and staff surveillance, helping to embed a visible and proactive safety culture.

Your expertise will be instrumental in identifying key risks and recommending effective control measures. You’ll support the development of our teams through coaching and knowledge sharing, helping to build capability and confidence in managing HSE responsibilities. Additionally, you’ll monitor the close-out of non-conformance reports and audit actions, ensuring continuous improvement is at the heart of everything we do.

Finally, you’ll act as a key point of contact when interfacing with external safety and environmental bodies, representing our commitment to excellence and compliance in all areas of health, safety, and environmental performance.

In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:

  • Must be a member of the Institute of Occupational Health and safety (IOSH) at Technical (TechIOSH) level or above
  • Knowledge of Network Rail Health and Safety Management System
  • Knowledge of Network Rail Environment Management System
  • Knowledge of maintenance processes and techniques
  • Knowledge of investigations process and techniques
  • Good interpersonal, influencing, communication and organisation skills

We would also like but it isn’t crucial to have/to be:

  • Knowledge of operational railway environment
  • Institute of Environmental Management Award (IEMA)
