Job summary

Orion Electrotech Ltd in Reading is seeking a Wireman on a temporary basis to join a well-established electronics manufacturing partner. The role involves building cable harnesses from wiring diagrams, measuring and stripping wire, and crimping tiny contacts with precision to ensure high quality assemblies.

Salary ranges from £15-£17 PAYE or £20-£23 Umbrella/Limited, depending on experience. Shift is Monday–Thursday 08:00-16:00 and Friday 08:00-14:00, with IR35 options available.

Qualifications

• Reads and interprets wiring diagrams and harness drawings.
• Experience assembling cables and wire harnesses.
• IPC/WHMA-A-620 trained or certified.

Responsibilities

• Build cable and wire harnesses from diagrams and job cards.
• Measure, cut and strip wire accurately (20 AWG to 30–32 AWG).
• Hand-crimp miniature contacts with correct tools and dies.
• Insert contacts into housings and verify latching.
• Inspect crimps under magnification and perform pull tests as required.
• Fit heat shrink, sleeving, labels, cable ties and route harnesses.
• Perform basic continuity checks and correct faults.

We’re working with a well-established business looking to add a Wireman to their team on a temp basis. What's involved?

• Build cable and wire harnesses from wiring diagrams, harness drawings, connector pin-outs, and job
  cards.
• Measure, cut and strip wire accurately, from 20 AWG down to 30–32 AWG, without nicking strands.
• Hand-crimp miniature contacts with the correct ratchet tool and die (e.g. JST SH, GH, PH and JWPF, Molex C-Grid III and Nano-Fit, Harwin M20).
• Insert contacts into housings in the right cavity and check they latch.
• Inspect your own crimps under magnification and carry out pull tests where required.
• Fit heat shrink, sleeving, labels, cable ties and lacing, and route and dress harnesses on boards.
• Carry out basic continuity checks and correct any faults found.
• Complete job cards, sign-offs and batch traceability records accurately.
• Raise drawing errors, non-conforming parts or tooling problems with your supervisor straight away.
• Keep your bench, tools and ESD controls in good order.

Key Requirements for the Wireman role:

• 2 years minimum experience with cables and wire harnesses
• IPC/WHMA-A-620 trained or certified
• You can read and work from wiring diagrams, harness drawings, and connector pin-out tables.
