Job summary

Test Triangle seeks an experienced UK-based Specialist Wireless Network Engineer for a National Grid programme to modernize and secure the UK network infrastructure. The role covers design, deployment, surveys, and BoM creation across office and industrial sites.

You will work with Cisco/Aruba WLAN, RF planning, 802.11 standards, and 5G/Cradlepoint solutions, traveling to National Grid locations for onsite surveys and validations, and collaborating with IT, operations and platform teams.

Qualifications

• Extensive hands-on experience with enterprise WLAN (Cisco, Aruba).
• Strong RF fundamentals and 802.11 knowledge.
• Experience with enterprise controllers and cloud-managed Wi‑Fi.
• Proficiency with Ekahau and other survey tools.
• Experience with 5G networking platforms.
• Experience with ISE and Aruba ClearPass for 802.1X.
• Ability to analyze network data and trends.
• Excellent communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Willingness to travel to National Grid sites for onsite surveys.

Responsibilities

• Design, deploy and optimise enterprise WLAN across offices and industrial sites.
• Conduct wireless surveys (predictive & on-site), RF analysis and coverage optimisation.
• Lead troubleshooting for complex Wi‑Fi issues, including authentication, interference and performance degradation.
• Create and update Low-Level Designs (LLDs) for Wi‑Fi, NAC and related network services.
• Produce accurate Bill of Materials (BoM) for deployments and upgrades.
• Support Wi‑Fi lifecycle management including hardware and software updates.
• Work with IT, operations and platform teams to deliver scalable solutions.
• Contribute to standards, best practices, design documentation and knowledge sharing.

Job description

Experienced UK based Specialist Wireless Network Engineer required for a programme of work within National Grid which aims to modernize and enhance the UK network infrastructure to improve reliability, security, and user experience. Key initiatives include replacing end‑of‑life network hardware, deploying enhanced Wi‑Fi solutions, and provisioning high‑speed internet connectivity services overlayed with SDWAN technology.

The programme will also progress alternative connectivity options such as satellite and 5G solutions for disaster recovery and rapid deployment, while supporting facility expansion projects.

Comprehensive wireless surveys and design work will be a significant part of this engagement, with ad‑hoc travel required to the UK national grid sites to conduct physical Wi‑Fi surveys and Desktop surveys with Ekahau tools.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, deploy and optimise enterprise wireless LAN solutions across office and industrial environments.
  
• Conduct wireless surveys (predictive & on‑site), RF analysis and coverage optimisation.
  
• Lead troubleshooting for complex Wi‑Fi issues, including authentication, interference and performance degradation.
  
• Create and update Low‑Level Designs (LLDs) for Wi‑Fi, NAC and related network services.
  
• Produce accurate Bill of Materials (BoM) for new deployments, refresh programmes and upgrade initiatives.
  
• Support Wi‑Fi lifecycle management including hardware upgrades, software updates and capacity planning.
  
• Work with stakeholders across IT, operations and platform teams to define requirements and deliver scalable solutions.
  
• Contribute to standards, best practices, design documentation and knowledge sharing within the network engineering chapter.
  

Required Skills & Experience

• Strong hands‑on experience with enterprise WLAN technologies (Cisco, Aruba).
  
• Deep understanding of:
  
• RF fundamentals (channel planning, power, interference mitigation)
  
• 802.11 standards including Wi‑Fi 5/6/6E/7
  
• Enterprise controllers, cloud‑managed Wi‑Fi platforms and policy engines
  
• Proficiency with wireless survey tools (Ekahau, Hamina etc.)
  
• Experience with Cradlepoint, or similar 5G cellular‑enabled networking platforms
  
• Experience supporting large‑scale Wi‑Fi environments in complex organisations.
  
• Experience with ISE and Aruba ClearPass for 802.1X, RADIUS, profiling and role‑based access
  
• Ability to interpret network analytics, performance data and incident trends.
  
• Excellent communication skills and comfort engaging with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  
• Able to travel ad‑hoc to National Grid locations for onsite pre and post deployment Wi‑Fi surveys
