Basic Function: The Wildlife Health Technician, Grade 1 is responsible, under the medical direction of the Veterinarians, this position is responsible for providing technical assistance to the veterinarians in the treatment and care of the animals, performing laboratory assignments and maintaining accurate records and data. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan. Wildlife Health Technician Grade 1 reports to the Supervisor, Wildlife Health.

Responsibilities:
  • Responsibilities include rotation through clinic, clinical laboratory and records/data entry.
  • Assist with surgical and clinical examinations, radiology, animal treatments, immobilizations and postmortem examinations.
  • Set up and clean up for procedures.
  • Perform treatments of hospitalized animals, including intensive care.
  • Assist with tours and guest interactions including speaking into microphone for Zoo guests and/or media during medical procedures performed in the Windows of Wildlife Science Gallery.
  • Administer first aid to animals in the absence but under the direction of the veterinarian, including drug administration.
  • Assist with nursery care/hand-rearing of neonates.
  • Obtain medical histories and admit animals to the Wildlife Health Centre.
  • Perform laboratory procedures, including but not limited to CBC’s, biochemistries, urinalysis, cytology and preparation of biological specimens, including shipments to external laboratories.
  • Dispense and administer medication under the direction of the veterinarian.
  • Assist with the parasitology program, including the dispensing of medications and fecal analysis.
  • Ensure that quarantine regulations are adhered to and report irregularities.
  • May be required to carry and use a two-way radio.
  • Ensures Supervisor is aware of work assignments and projects taking place within the work area, and keeps Supervisor informed of problems that may occur and the status of assignments and projects.
  • Responsible for the care and maintenance of instruments and equipment including sterilization.
  • Assist in maintaining veterinary records and compiling data for reports and research papers.
  • Assist with inventory and ordering of equipment and supplies.
  • Enter animal health records into the ZIMS system and maintain hard copy files.
  • Works closely with Behavioural Management team and Keepers to implement and perform training programs and procedures.
  • Ensures hospital disinfection protocols are implemented and followed.
  • Assists with the training of Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Extern students.
  • Keep work areas clean and tidy and maintain hospital efficiency.
  • Attend annual C.P.R. certification renewal program.
  • Maintain RVT status in good standing.
  • Follow all policies and branch instructions.
  • Attends appropriate training as required.
Qualifications:
  • Must have a certificate of graduation from a Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Technologist program from an accredited institution and be an active Registered Veterinary Technician.
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years' experience with zoo, exotic, large and/or wildlife species. Prior experience at a Zoological facility desirable.
  • Must have strong current laboratory skills including the ability to perform CBC’s, urinalysis, fecal analysis and cytology.
  • Must be able to produce brief /comprehensive reports.
  • Must be able to work with minimum supervision, in situations that are at times stressful, and within a team environment.
  • Must possess valid first aid and C.P.R. certificates.
  • Must be able to maintain neat accurate records and files.
  • Must ensure all applicable licenses and certificates remain valid and in good standing. Copies of licenses and certificates to be provided at time of hire and upon renewal.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills.
  • Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation.
  • Must possess an unrestricted Class G driver’s license valid in the Province of Ontario along with a good driving record.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems. (Including databases.)
  • Must be able to work weekends, shifts and holidays as scheduled.
  • Must be able to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • Capable of meeting the physical requirements of the position.
