Job description

Join to apply for the Weekend Caretaker role at Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea

Job Description

As a Caretaker at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC), you’ll play a vital part in looking after our estates – making sure they’re well maintained and safe for the people who live there.

Working Style

You’ll be based in the Borough for two days a week, covering weekends, playing a key role in serving the local community. You will be on the frontline, where you will be a part of a dedicated team making a real difference to residents’ lives.

What You’ll Be Doing

This is a hands-on role with plenty of variety. You’ll be responsible for keeping communal areas clean and tidy, carrying out regular inspections, reporting and resolving issues, and making sure buildings remain safe and well looked after. You’ll also remove hazards and deal with anything that could pose a risk to residents.

You’ll be working independently across one or more sites, taking ownership of your day-to-day tasks and knowing when to escalate something that needs extra support. Every building is a little different, so you’ll be assigned clear responsibilities for the one you’re working on. We’ll give you the tools and training to feel confident in your role – including hands-on experience and in-house courses such as BICS training.

You’ll use technology to complete checks and record your work, and there’s always someone on hand if you need help or advice.

What You’ll Bring

We’re not looking for formal qualifications – what matters most is that you’re active, reliable, and take pride in a job well done. You’ll be physically capable of manual work, like lifting, bending and moving items, and happy to be on your feet throughout the day.

You’ll also be someone who enjoys working with people. Whether it’s helping a resident or reporting a concern, you’ll be friendly, calm and respectful – while always prioritising safety and care.

Why join us

We’ll support you to grow your skills and confidence with ongoing training and a chance to progress into more senior roles. Our teams are friendly and approachable, with regular team meetings, monthly one-to-ones, and a strong culture of looking out for each other.

You’ll be given your own work phone and email, so you’re always connected to support if you need it. Senior caretakers are available to assist when things get busy, and you’ll never be far from the office if something needs sorting in person. There’s also time set aside for breaks and shared lunches, giving you space to connect with the team.
