Job summary

Penguin Recruitment Ltd is seeking a Principal Civil Engineer to lead civil design for water and wastewater projects in the UK. The role offers hybrid working and requires experience delivering major water sector designs with strong technical leadership.

You will mentor engineers, coordinate across disciplines, and contribute to bids and client engagement while ensuring compliance with UK standards and safety requirements.

Qualifications

• BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards professional status (ICE/IStructE/CIWEM).
• Minimum 8 years' experience delivering civil engineering designs in the UK water sector.
• Excellent leadership, mentoring, and stakeholder management skills.
• Proficient in design tools such as Tekla, TEDDS, STAAD, or AutoCAD.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel when required.

Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee the civil design and delivery of water and wastewater treatment projects.
• Produce and review technical reports, specifications, and construction drawings.
• Undertake design calculations and analysis using appropriate industry software.
• Coordinate civil design with mechanical, electrical, and process engineering disciplines.
• Conduct site visits, inspections, and provide technical support during construction.
• Mentor junior engineers, review deliverables, and maintain technical quality.
• Support business development through input into bids, proposals, and client engagement.
• Ensure compliance with UK standards, health and safety legislation, and quality procedures.
