Job description

Job Role: Water Hygiene - Remedial Engineer
Role Purpose

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Water Hygiene Remedial Engineer to join our CBRE team dedicated to the UCLH (University College London Hospitals) estate. You will be a vital part of our water safety infrastructure, specifically tasked with identifying and executing corrective actions to eliminate Legionella and Pseudomonas hazards. In this role, you will transition from routine monitoring to technical resolution, performing the critical mechanical and physical works required to ensure our water systems remain compliant with HTM 04-01 and safe for all patients, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities
Targeted Remediation:
  • Execute site-wide remedial works identified by the compliance team to address positive Legionella and Pseudomonas results.
  • Perform physical interventions, including the modification of pipework to eliminate "dead legs," installation/replacement of thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs), and removal of redundant pipework.
  • Conduct targeted thermal disinfection (thermal shock) and assist in chemical disinfection/chlorination processes of water systems to neutralise contamination.
System Integrity & Improvements:
  • Proactively identify systemic issues causing pathogen growth (e.g., poor circulation, temperature variances, scale buildup) and propose engineering solutions to the Water Hygiene Supervisor.
  • Carry out technical repairs on water distribution
Documentation & Reporting:
  • Ensure all remedial works are documented in accordance with Trust and CBRE standards, providing detailed evidence of the "Before" and "After" state for each intervention.
  • Update helpdesk systems upon the completion of works, ensuring that the compliance "audit trail" is accurate and up-to-date.
Compliance & Safety:
  • Work in strict adherence to all Health & Safety legislation, including COSHH assessments, RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements), and permit-to-work systems.
  • Ensure all works are compliant with HTM 04-01 guidance and the specific requirements of the UCLH Water Safety Group (WSG).
Collaboration:
  • Work closely with the Water Hygiene Technicians to understand recent sampling trends and hotspots.
  • Collaborate with the CBRE Water Hygiene Supervisor to provide technical feedback on the success of remedial works, helping to refine future maintenance strategies.
Person Specification/Requirements
  • Technical Expertise: Extensive experience in plumbing and water system engineering, specifically with a focus on remediation of healthcare water systems.
  • Specialised Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of HTM 04-01 and the specific engineering controls required to prevent Legionella and Pseudomonas proliferation.
  • Problem-Solving: Proven ability to diagnose root causes of contamination in complex hospital piping networks and implement effective, long-term engineering solutions.
  • Operational Standards: Strong familiarity with working in a high-security, sensitive healthcare environment, including strict infection control protocols.
  • Compliance Mindset: Diligent approach to paperwork; you understand that in a healthcare setting, a remedial action is not complete until it is fully documented and verified.
  • Certification: Relevant trade qualifications (NVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or similar) are essential. Experience with chemical handling and water treatment systems is highly desirable.
