Job description

Water Hygiene Engineer

Location: Basingstoke

Salary: Up to £30,000 per annum + OTE + Double Rate Overtime

Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday 8am - 4pm

About the Role:

We are looking for a Water Hygiene Engineer (which internally is known as a Critical Maintenance Engineer) to join our team, based within the Basingstoke area, carrying out planned preventative maintenance and water hygiene services across customer sites in the local area.

This is a great opportunity for someone with some experience in water hygiene, plumbing, facilities, maintenance or another relevant technical environment, as well as candidates with limited water hygiene experience who are looking to develop their skills and build a career within the industry.

You'll be carrying out routine water hygiene activities including flushing, sampling and temperature monitoring, helping our customers maintain safe and compliant water systems.

You don't need to know everything already - we'll provide the training and support you need to develop your knowledge and confidence in the role.

What You’ll Be Doing:
  • Carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on water systems
  • Completing routine flushing and water sampling
  • Taking and recording water temperatures
  • Carrying out routine checks on water systems
  • Identifying and reporting potential issues, defects or non-compliances
  • Accurately recording completed work using company systems
  • Working professionally on customer sites and maintaining positive client relationships
  • Following company health and safety procedures
  • Working in line with relevant water hygiene standards and guidance, including ACOP L8 and HSG274
  • Supporting the wider team with water hygiene and Legionella control activities
What We're Looking For:

We're looking for someone who is practical, reliable and keen to learn. You don't need extensive water hygiene experience — your attitude and willingness to develop are just as important.

You May Have:
  • Some experience in water hygiene, plumbing, facilities management, maintenance or a similar technical environment
  • Some previous experience carrying out PPM or routine maintenance
  • An interest in developing a career within the water hygiene industry
  • Good practical skills and attention to detail
  • Good communication skills and a professional approach when dealing with customers
  • The ability to work independently and manage your time effectively
  • A good understanding of workplace health and safety
  • A willingness to learn and undertake relevant training
  • A full UK driving licence
Why Join SMS Environmental?

At SMS Environmental, you'll be joining a team committed to maintaining safe and compliant water systems for our customers.

This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop your technical skills and build a career within the water hygiene industry, with training and support from an experienced team.

Whether you already have some experience in water hygiene or you're looking to transfer your existing practical skills into a new industry, we'd love to hear from you.

What's in it for me?
  • 37.5 hours per week (Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm) - plus paid overtime available
