A leading utility provider in the UK is seeking a Wastewater Planning Manager to lead the development of wastewater network capacity understanding and strategic investment opportunities. This role will involve technical leadership in the Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan (DWMP) and developing tools for capacity modeling. The ideal candidate will have a degree in a relevant field and substantial knowledge of wastewater operations and environmental assessments, alongside exceptional analytical and interpersonal skills.

Qualifications

  • A degree or postgraduate qualification in a science or environmental discipline or significant relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of wastewater network operations, modelling, DWMP, and environmental assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and communication of wastewater network capacity understanding.
  • Identify potential capacity constraints and opportunities for strategic investment.
  • Develop tools and processes to enable delivery of wastewater plans.
  • Technical lead for sections of the Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan.
  • Develop drainage and wastewater capacity model capability.
  • Identify risks and opportunities within horizon scanning activities.
  • Oversee development of DWMP price review content and cost adjustments where applicable.
  • Sponsor technical tools and research related to DWMP models and surveys.
  • Develop long-term strategies to address service gaps with cost/benefit analysis.

Wastewater Planning Manager

Salary: Competitive

Hybrid: 3 days per week in office

Location: Lingley Mere (UU), Lingley Green Avenue, Great Sankey, Warrington, WA5 3LP

The Role

Lead the development and communication of United Utilities’ understanding of current wastewater network capacity, including hydraulic performance and connectivity across the region.

Strengthen insight into future wastewater flows and loads within the network, identifying areas of potential capacity constraints or opportunities for growth that may require strategic investment.

Develop industry leading tools, processes, and templates to enable delivery of the plan.

Technical lead for sections of the Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan (DWMP) and the integration of this into strategy development.

Key Accountabilities
  • Technical lead for the wastewater network and environmental aspects of the Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan (DWMP).
  • Identify required scenarios to be tested as part of the DWMP process to ensure the business has a thorough understanding of long-term risk.
  • Develop drainage and wastewater capacity model capability associated with producing DWMPs.
  • Influence the industry's approach to wastewater network capacity forecasting and demand planning.
  • Responsible for horizon scanning within the function to understand the risk and opportunities for the DWMP.
  • Owner of core DWMP documents and data tables.
  • Develop Price Review content, which includes chapter content, designing performance commitments and preparing cost adjustment claims.
  • Sponsor projects relating to development of technical tools and research for DWMP e.g. models, surveys.
  • Identify and develop options and long-term strategies to address identified service gaps, including cost and benefit information.
Skills & Experience
  • A degree or postgraduate qualification in a science or environmental discipline or significant relevant experience in operational management of the wastewater system.
  • Demonstrate strategic thinking at all levels of the business.
  • Knowledge of wastewater network operations, modelling, DWMP, price review processes and environmental assessments.
  • Thorough understanding of the impact of wastewater activities on our customers and key stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical reasoning skills.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with experience of planning and delivering effective communication strategies and directing work.
  • Maintain knowledge and skills to develop within the role.
