Where the sick and the poor of Belfast were cared for by some of Belfast’s greats, such as Mary Ann McCracken. Where Dr William Drennan, famous for coining the phrase ‘The Emerald Isle’, administer the first smallpox inoculations, and the likes of Robert Joy kick started Belfast’s Industrial Revolution in the basement with cotton spinning on a never-before-seen-scale.The legacy and honourable history of this unique Belfast institution is now preserved by the Belfast Charitable Society in a busy heritage site that occupies the heart of the original 1774 building.
