Job summary

Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Service (CWPS) is a well-established Pathology Network in the South Midlands. The Virology and Molecular Pathology services are based at two main sites: University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust in Coventry and the George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton.

The department is multidisciplinary, responsible for the operational delivery of infectious disease Serology, Molecular testing, and Genomics testing for Blood Sciences and Cellular Pathology. The department operates a 24/7 service.

As Performance Section Manager, you will be the senior Biomedical Scientist responsible for monitoring and managing operational processes and staff to ensure the achievement of the department's objectives and KPIs.

Applicants without the required qualification for this Band 7 post (MSc, FIBMS, or IBMS Special examination) may be considered. In this case, the appointee will be employed as a Trainee Pathology Section Manager at Band 6 until qualification is obtained.

Main duties of the job
  • Engage with ongoing service transformation following equipment updates and managed service contract implementation, ensuring safe and effective delivery.
  • Manage KPIs such as TATS, PDR, and Mandatory training compliance.
  • Oversee staff performance and HR issues, including attendance.
  • Collect, interpret, and present data for operational reviews.
  • Plan and manage work schedules, rotas, and annual leave.
  • Manage technical test performance and equipment maintenance.

  • Design and plan departmental rotas, allocate work, and set priorities.
  • Support and deputise for the Department Manager.
  • Validate and interpret complex results, authorise reports.
  • Ensure quality management system compliance, oversee audits, and implement improvements.
  • Maintain laboratory standards in line with ISO/CPA, MHRA, HTA, HSE regulations.
  • Ensure quality assurance, internal record keeping, and effective communication.
  • Manage equipment maintenance and troubleshoot faults.
  • Achieve performance targets, manage KPIs, staff attendance, and training compliance.
  • Prepare data for reports and meetings.
  • Implement new techniques and equipment, support change management.
  • Manage stocks and materials efficiently.
  • Handle complex enquiries and complaints, document follow-up actions.
