Job summary

New England Animal Medical Center Primary Care, a thriving AAHA-accredited veterinary practice, offers veterinary students an externship to gain hands-on clinical experience while learning day-to-day operations of a successful hospital. You will work with experienced veterinarians, document histories, perform exams, develop plans, observe dentistry and acupuncture, and participate in preventive care.

This program emphasizes excellent medicine, compassionate care, and professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and document patient histories
  • Perform comprehensive physical examinations
  • Develop diagnostic and treatment plans with veterinarians
  • Interpret diagnostic findings and discuss case management
  • Observe and assist with dentistry procedures, including full-mouth radiography
  • Observe, assist with, or perform surgical procedures as appropriate to skill level and hospital protocols
  • Gain experience in medical management of hospitalized and outpatient cases
  • Learn about acupuncture and integrative treatment options
  • Enhance communication with veterinarians, technicians, support staff and clients
  • Develop understanding of hospital operations and team-based veterinary medicine

New England Animal Medical Center Primary Care is a thriving 5-doctor veterinary practice located in a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility dedicated to providing exceptional patient care and client service. As an AAHA-accredited and Fear Free Certified hospital, we are committed to practicing high-quality medicine while creating a positive experience for both pets and their families. In addition to comprehensive primary care services, we offer advanced dentistry with full-mouth radiographs on every dental patient and provide acupuncture services.

What You'll Experience:

An externship at our NVA hospital offers veterinary students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience while learning the day-to-day operations of a successful veterinary practice. Students work closely with experienced veterinarians in a supportive environment that emphasizes excellent medicine, compassionate care, and professional development.

Students may have the opportunity to:

Obtain and document patient histories

Perform comprehensive physical examinations

Develop diagnostic and treatment plans alongside veterinarians

Interpret diagnostic findings and discuss case management

Participate in preventive care and wellness appointments

Observe and assist with dentistry procedures, including full-mouth dental radiography

Observe, assist with, or perform surgical procedures as appropriate to skill level and hospital protocols

Gain experience in medical management of hospitalized and outpatient cases

Learn about acupuncture and integrative treatment options

Enhance communication skills through interactions with veterinarians, technicians, support staff, and clients

Develop an understanding of hospital operations and team-based veterinary medicine

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
