Job description

Transport Services is responsible for all aspects of transport and related services, including procurement, maintenance, and disposal on behalf of the Council. The fleet comprises approximately 800 vehicles, ranging from small light commercials to large heavy goods refuse vehicles. Transport Services operate from three vehicle repair facilities across Kirklees.

Your role involves working as part of a team to ensure that Kirklees Council remains at the forefront of vehicle maintenance excellence. You will receive training to develop your knowledge and practical skills to progress to a fully qualified Vehicle Technician. This includes working on the full range of fleet vehicles, carrying out tasks such as HGV Preventative Maintenance Inspections, scheduled servicing, auxiliary equipment repairs, preparing HGVs for periodic tests, attending breakdowns, and maintaining Electric and Hybrid Vehicles.

You must adhere to health and safety standards and local procedures, working safely at all times. Reporting to a Workshop Team Leader and the Transport Workshops Manager, you will be part of an evolving workshop environment that embraces technological innovations and continuous professional development.

The role requires carrying out vehicle inspections, servicing, maintenance, and repairs in line with DVSA standards. You will work primarily at George Street Depot in Dewsbury, with occasional work at our other workshop in Huddersfield.

We are looking for an individual who has:

  • Knowledge of vehicles and plant operated within local authorities, including related equipment
  • Possession of an HGV licence or willingness to undertake training to obtain one
  • City & Guilds/NVQ Level 2 in Motor Vehicle
  • Understanding of Health & Safety legislation relevant to workshop environments
  • Willingness to work at various locations within Kirklees
  • Experience in a busy workshop environment maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, or the ability to demonstrate sufficient experience and progress towards this
