Job summary

KAP Technical Limited is seeking a skilled Vehicle & Equipment Technician with strong generator experience in Banbury. You will diagnose faults, service diesel engines and generator systems, and perform complex mechanical and electrical repairs to ensure reliability and safety of power generation units.

The role involves preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis, and documentation of work performed, with potential contract extension and weekend overtime options. A BPSS clearance is required.

Qualifications

• 3+ years' hands-on experience with generators and heavy engines.
• NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
• Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
• Experience using diagnostic equipment and software.
• Commitment to safety, quality and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently with high technical and professional standards.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose faults and repair diesel engines, APUs, stationary generators and mobile generator systems.
• Carry out servicing, component replacement and engine overhauls where required.
• Diagnose and repair AC/DC electrical systems, control panels and power distribution systems.
• Perform preventative maintenance and load testing on power generation equipment.
• Record maintenance activities, faults and test results accurately.
• Ensure all work complies with health and safety regulations.

Vehicle & Equipment Technician - Generator & Power Systems

Location: Banbury, OX16 4SP

Rate: £22.00 per hour

Contract: Contract - 3 to 6 months, with potential to extend

IR35: Outside IR35

Security Clearance: BPSS - applicants must be eligible to achieve

About the Role

KAP Technical is working with a leading provider of engineering, technical and resource solutions across the automotive, power and industrial sectors.

We are currently seeking an experienced Vehicle & Equipment Technician with a strong background in generator repair, diesel engines and ground power systems.

The successful candidate will be responsible for preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis, servicing and complex mechanical and electrical repairs across a range of power generation units and heavy equipment. You will play a key role in ensuring equipment remains safe, reliable and operational to the required technical standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnostics & Repairs: Diagnose faults, service and repair diesel engines, auxiliary power units (APUs), stationary generators and mobile generator systems.
• Mechanical Maintenance: Carry out servicing, component replacement, repairs and full engine overhauls where required.
• Electrical Systems: Diagnose, test and repair AC/DC electrical systems, control panels, wiring, electrical controls and power distribution systems.
• Preventative Maintenance: Complete scheduled servicing, routine inspections, functional checks and load testing on power generation equipment.
• Fault Finding: Identify and resolve complex mechanical, electrical and control system faults using appropriate diagnostic equipment and software.
• Safety & Compliance: Ensure all work is completed in accordance with relevant health and safety legislation, manufacturer specifications and technical procedures.
• Documentation: Accurately record maintenance activities, faults, repairs and test results, ensuring all work is completed to the required sign-off standards.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

• 3+ years' hands-on experience working with generators, heavy diesel engines, auto-electrics, heavy plant or commercial equipment.
• An NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Heavy Plant or Automotive Maintenance.
• Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
• Experience working with diesel engines and generator or power generation systems.
• The ability to interpret technical documentation, wiring diagrams and manufacturer specifications.
• Experience using diagnostic equipment and software.
• A strong focus on safety, quality and attention to detail.
• The ability to work independently while maintaining high technical and professional standards.
• Eligibility to obtain BPSS security clearance.
