Job description

Vehicle & Machinery Lead

Salary: Up to £40,000 per annum (DOE)

Location: Ashford, Kent

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Mechanic to support our operational division as the new Vehicle and Machinery Manager. This unique, custom-built role involves maintaining both our company vehicles and agricultural/horticultural equipment.

The role requires hands-on mechanical work and management responsibilities, overseeing one staff member, and maintaining over 1,500 pieces of equipment and more than 70 vehicles, including tractors, vans, trailers, ride-on mowers, hand tools, and waste containers.

You will occasionally travel across the county to our satellite depots or customer sites to ensure equipment is in optimal condition. You will also develop proactive maintenance schedules and coordinate external inspections or maintenance such as MOTs.

This position demands a mechanical skill set to keep our fleet and equipment mobile, efficient, and compliant, along with computer literacy to manage assets effectively.

An essential requirement is a full UK driving license. Experience in agricultural or specialized mechanical fields is preferred.

Key duties include:

  • Managing and working with a Workshop Fitter and liaising with our operations team to maintain and repair plant, equipment, and vehicles
  • Organizing and performing maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime and ensure roadworthiness and legal compliance
  • Completing documentation to ensure compliance with legislation and company policies
  • Liaising with grounds maintenance contract managers for procurement, disposal, or sale of equipment
  • Conducting preventative maintenance, inspections, servicing, and preparing vehicles for MOT testing, prioritizing health and safety
  • Assessing resource requirements and liaising with suppliers and clients to meet budget and timescale targets

Requirements:

  • Management experience in a similar field
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.)
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to coordinate maintenance schedules and handle unplanned tasks
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations in this sector
  • Understanding of vehicle, horticultural, and agricultural equipment (desired)
  • Ability to interpret task and data sheets related to vehicles and plant
  • Experience as an Agricultural Mechanical Technician or Plant Machinery Engineer (beneficial)
