Ian Carpenter, VAT Partner: “What is VAT? I didn't know it at the time but my career in tax started when I passed the civil service entrance exam. I initially thought I would choose between the Foreign Office, the MOD, or the Home Office, but was told I was joining HMRC, and my options were VAT or Excise, neither of which I had heard of. I chose VAT, but I can't say why. From that uncertain start, I developed a love for this tax; the balance between inputs and outputs, its relation to business transactions, and its case law. I enjoy engaging with tax professionals who share my passion and business leaders who need help understanding its impact on their transactions. After 10 years at HMRC, I joined the profession and have been at RSM for 12 years, the longest time I’ve spent anywhere in my career. RSM feels different because of our culture of sharing and collaboration to serve our clients and support our teams. It’s a privilege to lead and grow my service line, mentoring those starting their careers and helping them progress. I am passionate about technology and believe that the future of tax administration will be shaped by increased automation and digital tools, providing exciting opportunities to improve our services and insights for clients. VAT is a gateway to a rewarding career!”
