The Archaeology Data Service (ADS) is seeking a Data Wrangler to enhance metadata pipelines and lead best-practice metadata work. The role involves hands-on wrangling, enrichment, and collaboration with international partners to advance repository metadata capabilities.

You will design and implement improvements, map metadata to standards and ontologies, and advise on strategy while coordinating with ADS teams and external collaborators.

• In-depth knowledge of metadata standards, models, and controlled vocabularies or gazetteers in at least one discipline.

The Archaeology Data Service (ADS) is a world-leading digital repository which provides digital data archiving services for UK archaeology. We are a recognised component of UKRI’s research infrastructure and hold the Core Trust Seal. We are based in the University of York but work closely with external partners, both in Higher Education and in the public and commercial archaeological sectors. In addition to our internal bespoke systems that underpin the workflows of our digital preservation activity, the ADS also hosts public-facing services to facilitate the collection of digital material. These include ADS-EASY for online deposition of files, and OASIS, a system for the recording of fieldwork events in the UK, hosted on behalf of national heritage agencies.

Role

The role is primarily designed to improve and evolve the current metadata pipelines and processes at the ADS in tandem with our work with International Partners, and act as the strategic and best-practice lead for metadata within the organisation. This will involve working on enhancements for enriching ADS metadata and practical work including integration of controlled vocabularies and gazetteers, mapping to metadata standards and ontologies, and (meta)data wrangling, cleaning, and transformation. It will include both hands-on work, and an advisory role with regard to current metadata management best practice, and helping to design the ongoing organisational strategy for metadata management.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will have experience of working with metadata in a repository, data archive or similar environment, and the ability to collect metadata from services or filestores and transform and enhance both structured metadata and ‘messy’ data. You will have in-depth knowledge of common metadata standards and models, and controlled vocabularies and gazetteers in at least one discipline area.
