Job description

Job Title: UX Researcher

Salary: £39,900 – £51,900

Location: Cambridge, UK – Hybrid

Contract: Permanent

Hours: Full time, 35 hours per week

Uncover what matters most to teachers and learners, and help shape digital education products used around the world.

We are Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a world-leading academic publisher and assessment organisation and a proud part of the University of Cambridge.

Join the Education UX Research team and help shape products and services used by teachers, learners and education professionals around the world. Working closely with colleagues across product, design and education, you will scope and deliver research, generate actionable insights, and help teams make confident decisions.

About the role

As a UX Researcher, you will lead research on focused projects and contribute to larger strategic programmes. You will use both generative and evaluative methods, researching remotely and in the field. Your work will help teams understand customer needs, test ideas and improve products throughout the design process.

You will also work with the UX Research and wider UX Education teams to help us strengthen consistent and scalable research practices. This includes contributing to shared methods, guidance and an accessible repository of research insights.

Additional responsibilities and accountabilities include:

  • Scope, plan and conduct research using methods such as interviews, surveys and usability testing.
  • Select appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods for the research objectives and project context.
  • Recruit representative participants and coordinate incentive payments in line with research ethics and data privacy requirements.
  • Analyse and synthesise evidence, presenting clear insights and actionable recommendations.
  • Lead research on focused projects, including managing research budgets where required.
  • Collaborate with UX researchers, UX designers, product managers, and education and assessment specialists.
  • Support colleagues with less research experience to plan and conduct effective usability testing.
  • Contribute to shared research approaches, toolkits and an organisation-wide insights repository.
  • Advocate for customers, accessibility and inclusion throughout the end-to-end design process.

This position has been classified as a hybrid role, requiring the selected candidate to typically spend 40-60% of their time collaborating and connecting face-to-face at their dedicated location. Aside from our hybrid principles, other flexible working requests will be considered from the first day of employment, including other work arrangements should you require adjustments due to a disability or long-term health condition.

About You

You will have practical experience of planning, conducting and communicating UX research. You can work independently on research projects, collaborate effectively with stakeholders and use evidence to influence decisions and improve user experiences.

To succeed in this role, you will bring experience and a good understanding of:

  • Research scoping and planning: Understanding the decisions that research needs to inform, defining clear research objectives, and creating practical plans aligned with organisational priorities and project context.
  • Conducting UX research: Applying qualitative and quantitative methods effectively to generate robust evidence that addresses the research objectives.
  • Recruiting representative participants: Defining participant criteria and recruiting participants to best meet the research objectives.
  • Ethical and inclusive research practices: Considering ethics, data privacy, participant wellbeing and accessibility throughout the research process.
  • Analysing and synthesising evidence: Identifying meaningful patterns with a range of analysis techniques; using evidence to develop clear and actionable recommendations relevant to the business context.
  • Managing research delivery: Managing research activities effectively, balancing priorities, meeting deadlines and adapting to changing circumstances.
  • Communicating and influencing: Communicating clearly and effectively with different audiences, using storytelling and evidence to build shared understanding, support decision-making and maximise the impact of research.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams: Building effective stakeholder relationships, facilitating discussions that align teams on research objectives, and creating shared understanding of user needs throughout the agile design and delivery process.

If you meet the above minimum requirements, we encourage you to apply. Your application will be even stronger if you can also demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

  • Supporting research capability: Giving and receiving constructive feedback, and helping colleagues with less research experience to conduct effective research.
  • Research operations and knowledge management: Contributing to shared research practices, processes, guidance, repositories or other approaches to managing research knowledge and insights.
  • Research frameworks and approaches: Flexibly applying and adapting different research frameworks such as Jobs to be Done, Atomic Research or similar approaches.
