Job description

Salary: £30,515 - £32,046

Expires: 11/11/2026

Location: Kirklees, West Yorkshire, West Yorkshire

Job Type: Full Time

Traffic management is changing. Advances in intelligent transport systems, real-time data, connected infrastructure and network monitoring are transforming how highway authorities manage increasingly complex transport networks.

At Kirklees Council, we’re looking for a talented Senior Engineer to help drive that transformation. This is an opportunity to work across a diverse and complex highway network, supporting around 1,934km of roads and a network of 257 traffic signal sites, whilst helping to develop the next generation of Urban Traffic Control technology.

Working within our Urban Traffic Control team, you’ll combine traditional traffic signal engineering with innovation and technology. From optimising existing signal networks and managing critical UTC assets to exploring new approaches to data-led traffic management, you’ll help us deliver a smarter, more resilient, and more efficient highway network for the future. The team manages traffic signals, intelligent detection systems, traffic monitoring technology, communications infrastructure, and wider network management systems that support the safe and efficient movement of people and goods across the borough.

This is more than a traditional traffic signals role. It’s an opportunity to influence how a forward-thinking Highway Authority uses technology, data, and innovation to meet the transport challenges of the future.

About The Role

As a Senior Engineer within the Urban Traffic Control Team, you’ll help manage and develop a specialist portfolio of traffic signals, UTC systems, intelligent detection systems, traffic monitoring technology and communications infrastructure.

You’ll be involved in the design, operation, maintenance, renewal, and optimisation of traffic signals and associated technology, together with asset management, incident response, and the delivery of technology-led improvements across the highway network. Working closely with colleagues, regional partners and industry specialists, you’ll help improve road safety, journey reliability and network performance whilst helping shape the future of Urban Traffic Control in Kirklees.

You Should Have

  • Experience in traffic signals, UTC or Intelligent Transport Systems.

  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience delivering engineering projects and managing technology assets.

  • Knowledge of traffic signal design, operation, and maintenance.

  • Good communication and leadership skills.

  • A relevant engineering qualification, or equivalent demonstrable industry experience.

  • A full UK driving licence.

Experience with MOVA, SCOOT, UTC systems, or other Intelligent Transport Systems would be advantageous.

We Offer

  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements, supported by flexi-time, helping you achieve a healthy work-life balance.

  • Generous annual leave entitlement.

  • Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme

  • Ongoing training, professional development and career progression opportunities.

  • Modern offices in Huddersfield town centre, conveniently located close to bus and rail transport hubs.

  • Health and wellbeing support, employee discounts, Cycle to Work and Travel Pass schemes, and a range of additional staff benefits.

Why Kirklees?

  • Be part of a forward-thinking Highway Authority investing in innovation and smarter network management.

  • Help shape the future development of Urban Traffic Control and Intelligent Transport Systems.

  • Collaborate with regional partners, technology providers, and industry specialists.

  • Deliver projects that have a direct impact on residents, businesses and the travelling public.

  • Work across a diverse network of urban centres, strategic routes, and rural communities, providing varied and rewarding engineering challenges.

  • Join a service that values collaboration, continuous improvement, and professional growth.
