Job summary

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council is seeking an experienced Urban Design & Planning Policy Officer to help shape how the borough grows, balancing growth with high-quality design and place-making. The role sits within the Planning Policy Team and will influence major development proposals.

You will lead policy preparation, prepare design guidance and provide urban design input on major applications, collaborating with Development Management, developers and communities to secure better design

Qualifications

• Experience in planning, urban design, and master planning.
• Knowledge of national planning, design and placemaking agendas.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Ability to manage complex projects and balance priorities.
• Membership of RTPI or equivalent is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Lead or contribute to the preparation of Rotherham's Local Plan.
• Develop planning policies and guidance that promote high-quality design and place-making.
• Lead evidence base projects relating to design, townscape and character.
• Provide urban design advice on major and strategic development proposals.
• Work with Development Management to influence schemes at early stages.
• Engage with developers, consultants, local communities and elected members to secure better design outcomes.
• Prepare design guidance, master planning advice and policy documents.
• Support the delivery of sustainable growth, regeneration and investment across the borough.
