Underwriting Support Assistant (15-Month FTC)

Looking for a role that could kick-start your career in insurance?

At Markel, we're not just looking for someone to provide support. We're looking for someone who wants to learn, develop and grow as part of one of our most successful and expanding underwriting teams.

This is an opportunity to join our thriving Care Renewals Team, supporting a portfolio of specialist care, charity, social welfare and not-for-profit clients across the UK. You'll work alongside experienced Underwriters, gain valuable exposure to commercial insurance, and develop skills that could open the door to a long-term underwriting career. In fact, the person you're replacing is progressing internally into an underwriting role, demonstrating the genuine career pathways available within the team.

Whether you're a recent graduate, have customer service experience, or are looking for a new challenge in a professional office environment, we'd love to hear from you.

Why Join the Care Renewals Team?

The team continues to grow year-on-year, providing excellent opportunities for development and progression.

You'll join a supportive team of around 15 colleagues who pride themselves on delivering exceptional service, working collaboratively and supporting each other's development.

What You'll Be Doing:

No two days are the same in this varied and fast-paced role. You'll play a key part in helping our Underwriters manage their portfolios efficiently and effectively.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting Underwriters and Senior Underwriters with day-to-day administration.
  • Running workflow reports and allocating tasks across the team.
  • Preparing renewal files and gathering key risk information.
  • Coordinating property and risk surveys.
  • Reviewing and tracking survey requirements.
  • Researching and collating information such as CQC reports and supporting documentation.
  • Managing incoming calls, messages and broker enquiries.
  • Following up outstanding information with brokers.
  • Updating internal systems and maintaining accurate records.
  • Assisting with ad hoc projects and wider team initiatives.
What We're Looking For:

We're open-minded when it comes to background and experience. More important than industry knowledge is your attitude, organisation skills and willingness to learn.

We're particularly interested in candidates who:

  • Are highly organised and detail focused.
  • Enjoy working in a busy environment.
  • Are confident communicating with a range of people.
  • Can manage and prioritise multiple tasks.
  • Take ownership and use their initiative.
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Are comfortable using Microsoft Office and learning new systems.
  • Enjoy working as part of a team.
  • Have customer service, administration or office-based experience.

Previous insurance experience would be advantageous but is by no means essential. Full training will be provided.

A Great Opportunity to Build a Career:

This role offers an excellent entry point into the insurance industry and provides direct exposure to experienced Underwriters, specialist insurance products and commercial decision-making.

Potential career pathways include:

As a growing portfolio and business area, we are committed to developing talent and creating progression opportunities wherever possible.

What You'll Get in Return:
  • Good starting salary +5% bonus at the end of the FTC
  • Comprehensive training and support.
  • Exposure to specialist insurance markets.
  • Genuine development and progression opportunities.
  • Supportive and collaborative team culture.
  • Opportunity to secure a longer-term career with Markel.
Working Pattern:

  • Core office days: Monday and Tuesday.
  • Third office day chosen by you.
  • Additional office attendance may be required during your onboarding and training period.
