We are seeking an experienced Underwriter & Team Leader to join our Manchester team. In this pivotal role, you'll act as the first point of contact for our Cargo, Freight, and Engineering underwriters—providing day-to-day supervision, technical expertise, and mentoring to support the development of less experienced team members.

Responsibilities

  • Handle end-to-end processes for a designated portfolio, working on-site with intermediaries/customers to deliver business development plans aligned with the company's trading strategy.
  • Develop strong relationships with intermediaries, balancing their needs with the company's trading objectives to ensure profitable growth.
  • Plan and organize work to meet customer service and credit control targets.
  • Serve as a point of reference for issues related to intermediaries/customers or less experienced staff, ensuring high customer service standards.
  • Maintain a balanced, high-quality portfolio by effectively using gathered information.
  • Mentor team members on complex matters.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure high service levels.

Supervision

  • Manage team holidays and sickness via the MyView system.
  • Distribute renewals and manage workloads.
  • Assist with implementing new initiatives, processes, and procedures.
  • Conduct regular feedback sessions with employees and communicate with the Operations Manager.
  • Promote adherence to policies and procedures, liaising with relevant stakeholders.
  • Conduct onboarding for new starters, including office orientation and safety procedures.
  • Ensure display of current H&S and insurance documents.
  • Drive good conduct to deliver optimal outcomes for customers and policyholders.
  • Understand escalation procedures and responsibilities related to conduct risk management.

Compliance

  • Act with honesty and integrity at all times.
  • Exercise due care, skill, and diligence.
  • Maintain transparency with regulators such as the FCA and PRA.
  • Prioritize customer interests and fairness.
  • Observe market conduct standards.
  • Support the Consumer Duty rules, including acting in good faith, avoiding harm, and enabling customers to pursue financial objectives.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Deep understanding of technical underwriting and company trading strategies.
  • Ability to interpret management information effectively.
  • Knowledge of the local market.
  • Diploma CII/ACII or progress towards is preferred.

Key Relationships

  • Internal: team members, commercial team, managers, claims, central services, syndicate, directors.
  • External: intermediaries and customers.

Qualifications

  • Diploma CII/ACII or substantial progress towards is preferred.
