We are seeking an experienced Underwriter & Team Leader to join our Manchester team. In this key role, you will act as the first point of contact for our Cargo, Freight, and Engineering underwriters—providing day-to-day supervision, technical expertise, and mentoring to support the development of less experienced team members.

Responsibilities

• Handle end-to-end processes for the allocated portfolio, working on-site with intermediaries/customers to deliver business development plans aligned with the company’s trading strategy.
• Develop strong relationships with intermediaries, balancing their needs with the company's trading objectives to ensure profitable and balanced growth.
• Plan and organize work to help the team meet customer service and credit control targets.
• Serve as a reference point for issues related to the assigned intermediary/customer or less experienced staff, ensuring high customer service standards.
• Maintain a balanced, high-quality portfolio by effectively utilizing gathered information.
• Mentor team members on complex matters.
• Collaborate with other departments to ensure high service levels.

Supervision

• Manage team holidays and sickness via the MyView system.
• Distribute renewals and manage workloads.
• Assist with implementing new initiatives, processes, and procedures in collaboration with the Operations Manager.
• Conduct regular feedback sessions with employees and report to the Operations Manager.
• Promote adherence to policies, procedures, and processes, liaising with relevant stakeholders.
• Oversee office induction for new staff, including safety procedures.
• Ensure display of current health and safety, and insurance documents.
• Drive good conduct to achieve optimal outcomes for customers and policyholders.
• Understand escalation processes and responsibilities within governance structures.

Regulatory Compliance

• Act with honesty and integrity at all times.
• Exercise due care, skill, and diligence.
• Maintain transparency with regulators such as the FCA and PRA.
• Prioritize customer interests and fairness.
• Observe market conduct standards.
• Support consumer duty rules, including acting in good faith, avoiding harm, and enabling customers to pursue their financial goals.

Knowledge and Skills

• Deep understanding of technical underwriting and company trading strategies.
• Ability to interpret management information effectively.
• Knowledge of the local market.
• Diploma CII/ACII or progress towards is preferred.

Key Relationships

• Internal: team members, commercial and claims departments, central services, syndicate, and leadership.
• External: intermediaries and customers.
