Job summary

Polaris Community, Holdsworth School in Burnley, Lancashire, seeks a Tutor for a full-time, term-time role with a basic salary of 24,000 FTE. The school serves pupils aged 5–18 with complex needs and offers a supportive, holistic environment.

You will support wellbeing, learning readiness and behaviour management, lead on Reading and Phonics, and contribute to pupil development and staff collaboration.

Qualifications

  • GCSE Grade C or equivalent in English Language and Mathematics.
  • Previous HLTA experience.
  • Experience with pupils with SEMH in an educational setting.
  • Willing to take additional responsibility across school areas (e.g., Food Hygiene, Forest School, Lunchtimes, etc.).
  • Experience of behaviour management and techniques.
  • Committed to professional development and willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Support wellbeing, readiness for learning, resilience and behaviour management within Holdsworth School.
  • Work with the education team to support pupils' personal and academic development by removing barriers to learning.
  • Lead classes during PPA and absence cover; planning supported by teaching staff.
  • Deliver an enrichment golden time activity.
  • Lead on Reading and Phonics; develop the Pupil Voice with SLT involvement.
  • Develop relationships with parents/carers and participate in transitions and consultations.

About Our School

Located in Burnley, Lancashire, our school has the capacity for up to 48 pupils and offers a safe and supportive environment for pupils from 5 to 18 years old with a range of complex needs. Role Responsibilities
  • To support the improvement of wellbeing, readiness for learning, resilience and behaviour management within Holdsworth School
  • Work with members of the education team to support young people's personal and academic development by removing barriers to learning
  • To promote positive learning behaviour with young people
  • To lead classes during PPA and absence cover. Planning will be supported by teaching staff
  • To deliver an enrichment golden time activity
  • To support in lessons with academic understanding or pastoral, emotional or behavioural need
  • To respond to immediate concerns, clarifying the situation
  • To create and collate information relating to lessons and interventions delivered
  • To assist in the preparation of information relevant to meetings about pupils
  • To be an advocate for the ethos of Holdsworth School
  • To lead on Reading and Phonics, reviewing progress made by young people
  • To develop the role of Pupil Voice, liaising with SLT about the Pupil Council
  • To develop relationships with parents/carers, taking an active role in transitions and consultation visits
Requirements
  • Have a strong basic education, with a minimum of GCSE Grade C or equivalent in English Language and Mathematics, and sound IT skills
  • Previous experience in a similar role, i.e. HLTA
  • Some previous experience of working with pupils with SEMH within an educational setting
  • Be experienced and confident enough to take additional responsibility in an area of school, i.e. Food Hygiene, Forest School, Lunchtimes, School Yoga etc.
  • Experience of behaviour management and techniques
  • Committed to professional development and willing to learn
