Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join our dynamic service within Barts Health NHS Trust. The successful applicant will contribute to the Trauma & Orthopaedics combined rota at The Royal London and Newham University Hospital, including the Barts Health Orthopaedic Centre (BHOC). This will provide experience in adult and paediatric major trauma care, as well as a full breadth of elective services.

Applicants should possess full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) in the United Kingdom. Your role will be supported by a large team of fellows and consultants. There are numerous opportunities to get involved with teaching, research, quality improvement projects, and audits. Career development is supported through registrar teaching programmes and mentoring, to develop individual portfolios and support career progression.

Main duties of the job
  • Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in the trauma and orthopaedic service, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.
  • Liaison and communication with the Lead Clinician for Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery, the General Manager, and Clinical Director for the Surgery Clinical Academic Group.
  • Development of personal interests within the specialty, including active participation in research programs.
  • Management of medical students professionally.
  • Contributing to a comprehensive and efficient trauma and orthopaedic surgical service.
  • Providing evidence-based care for inpatients and outpatients, working flexibly to the prescribed rota, including inpatient and outpatient duties.
  • Adhering to NHS standards and quality guidelines.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Participate in department management, liaise with Lead Clinicians, General Manager, and Clinical Director. Be prepared to carry out other duties in emergencies. Contribute to emergency on-call services, manage and admit patients, and work across hospitals in a combined rota system compliant with the European Working Time Directive. Ensure continuous care of orthopaedic inpatients, attend clinics and theatres, and cross-cover as needed.
